Walker

Hi All~

My name is Kelly Walker and I want to tell you a story and then ask you a few questions...

Joseph Dodds is a family friend who is about to begin his senior year at Arizona Christian University, working on a Christian Ministries with a minor in Youth Studies...maybe. He intends to do something really great with his education. It won’t be wasted. He’s worked hard these last three years and was excited to finally be a senior until he learned he did not have enough funding to finish his last year of college.

Having worked in financial aid in various colleges over the last eleven years, I can tell you that tuition does indeed go up each year, and the search for scholarships gets more and more competitive. Many students cannot finish the degree they started because of funding issues. Joseph’s Mom stated it would take a miracle to find the funding for this last year. Joseph followed all the steps his school’s financial aid gave him and received what he could from them. The tuition fees and books finally caught up to his available funding. He’s short $8,614.00 for tuition and fees for the year.

Now let me tell you a bit about this young man. The Walker family met this young man back when he played high school football with my son. He always struck me as a very kind and earnest person. He intended to serve the Lord. Now I know some don’t follow this belief and that’s fine. He intends to serve the community and no matter what your belief, we all are a part of a community. It shows character that he wants to use his education to serve the greater good.

So here are my questions: those of you who have a college degree, imagine you realized you did not have enough money to cover your senior year and would have to STOP attending. No degree and heavy loans to pay back with nothing to show for it. What would you do? How would you feel?

I am suggesting a few things to Joseph in regard to scholarship and private funding. He’s working on a few things in the next few weeks. My hope is that he finds funding in time…and I intend to help him.

I’m asking everyone to give up the equivalent of one cup of Starbucks, or maybe one fast food meal. $5-$10 is not a lot to ask. And if everyone pitches in at least this amount (more if you can!), this young man will be able to finish his degree. This won’t solve all the funding issues out there, but it might solve one. And wouldn’t you like to be part of a miracle? Give up one cup of coffee or one lunch out… I know I will!

Joseph Dodds

620 N.
