Fantasy and Gothic Artist

I've been interested in art, like a lot of artists, since I could hold a paintbrush. At the age of fifteen I discovered Photoshop, and almost immediately I decided I wanted to be a professional artist. I told my parents I wanted to drop out of high school so I would have more time to work on my art. They were obviously thrilled by this announcement (har!), but they helped me anyway. Shortly after my sixteenth birthday I had earned my GED, started selling my work online, and was looking at art schools and colleges to attend.

I had my first art show at the age of seventeen, and it was a sell-out success. I think my parents realized then I wasn't completely out of my mind. I attended art school for a short time, but it wasn't for me. While I was away at school my parents renovated an old hay barn on their property, and that became my first real studio.

For a little over a year I used the barn to self-publish prints, calendars, and books of my work. Around that time the economy took a dive, and I had to cut back on the number of art shows I was sending work to due to slow sales. I stopped publishing books as well during that time and started thinking of other ways I could expand my business.

In 2009 I started putting those plans into effect, and I self-published a range of postcards, keychains, magnets, bookmarks, and various other gift items. I also started working on an entirely new portfolio and style, and these things combined helped my business to start growing during one of the worst economic downturns in U.S. history.

I also met my husband in 2009, and took break in 2010 and the first half of 2011 to have a child. Our son was born early with life-threatening complications, a situation that nearly claimed my life as well. Recovery for both of us was slow, but neither of us has any lasting complications. The massive debt from our health care took a bite out of my business in 2011, but we recovered and now my business is growing rapidly again.

I am always re-inventing my work, product lines, and myself in an effort to keep my business new and interesting for my customers. I like to paint subjects I haven't painted before, and I love working with new companies to manufacture products with my art on them!

I still self-publish a variety of products, and have created an account here to help fund some of these products. I also license my work out to other companies for third-party merchandise, and I work as a concept artist, book cover artist, and interior illustrator, as well as occasionally taking portrait commissions. I like to work hard all the time, and it's pretty common for me to still be working on Christmas.
