The object of man is to live, not merely to exist.

Hi all!

You may be wondering how I am connected to this small primary school in a back-country town in Kenya. Well let me tell you a little bit about myself.

My love affair with living and working in Africa began some years ago while studying International Development at the University Of Ottawa. After various stints of studying, working and traveling around Western and Southern Africa, I am back again on this amazing continent to catch a glimpse of the incredibly innovative ways it is dealing with future. Children and Youth Development have grown to be my passions, since you can't do anything sustainable if you don't involve the future generations. True to the saying, there is always something new coming out of Africa!

My reason for being in Kenya is as follows: The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) provides 6-month internship to recent university graduates who are looking to dabble in a little adventure in a developing country, while gaining some valuable work and life experiences. I am on one of these internships, working primarily at the Kimathi University College of Technology in Nyeri, Kenya. My position here is as a Community Development Officer, mainly with the aim of connecting this new university with the surrounding community, so that the students can get the fullest out of their university experience, and the community can benefit from the university's presence. It's a two-way road.

While I'm working on many campus-wide projects, my work doesn't just end at the campus borders. I volunteer with various community-based projects around town, including a children's orphanage, a women's group reusable sanitary pad project and, of course, Muringato Primary School. This school, where I visit at least once a week to run their Girls Empowerment Club, has burrowed its way into my heart, both by the enthusiastic and ever-excited students, and the dedicated and passionate staff. There are many schools in Kenya that need assistance, just as there are many plants in the desert that need watering; we cannot reach them all, but we can do what we can to help a few.

I am incredible appreciative of all of your support, I couldn't do this without you!

Asante sana (Thanks very much in Kiswahili)!

Annie
