<p>I am a piano instructor, composer, arts advocate, and business woman.</p> <p>I have been performing on the piano for over fifteen years. Playing the piano has always been a great source of joy for me, so I wanted to share this joy with others through teaching. This is what prompted Joe and I to start our studio about three years ago.</p> <p>One of my favorite things about teaching is helping students gain the confidence to make a piece of music their own. I believe this is most effectively accomplished when a student becomes inspired not only to practice more, but to think analytically about the music and come up with their own ideas about how to interpret the music as a performer.</p> <p>I believe music is a language, a unique means of self-expression. In addition to teaching students how to play the piano, I also enjoy working with my students to compose their own music, that incorporates musical techniques or theory recently covered in their lessons. Two of my students have performed their own compositions in our studio recitals. These performances were incredibly rewarding for the students and their families. I can't wait to feature more composers in our upcoming recitals!</p> <p>In addition to teaching, I also love composing songs for voice and piano. I wrote and performed my works frequently throughout my teenage years, and less frequently through college and graduate school, as I was working to further develop my professional skill sets. However, I have continued to nurture this hobby in my free time, and I am very much looking forward to an upcoming&nbsp;songwriting&nbsp;collaboration with my cousin, Jake Smith!</p> <p>Most recently, I have finished a dual-degree Masters program at the University of Cincinnati, in which I studied Arts Management in the Nonprofit sector as well as Business Administration. I plan to use my MBA and arts management training to better inform the business operations and sustainability of Backer Piano Studio's expansion.&nbsp;</p>
