I am a Physician by training, but 10 years ago seeing the displacement being caused by the armed conflict in Colombia, my native country, I decided that something had to be done to help these families.

I founded Cigarra in the outskirts of Bogotá, where people were taking refuge, with the desire to give these refugees hope of a new life. The reason for the name on the NGO is taken from the life cycle of the Cicada, or Cigarra in Spanish, which lives most of its life undeground, unseen to all, and then emerges from the ground into the sunlight and completes its cycle of life. Likewise our goal is to enable these people to emerge and fulfill their potential.
