Brandon Longwood

Asheville, North Carolina, United States

An 8-year veteran of adult entertainment, Brandon Longwood is now pointing the camera back on the industry to shed light on one of society’s most taboo subjects—pornography. In Staying Power: The Business and Value of the Adult Entertainment Industry, Longwood draws upon his experience as a porn performer, producer, and website designer in order to draw back the curtain on the everyday people behind the highest grossing entertainment industry in the world. The soft-spoken Longwood continually aims to educate others on sexuality through his work on camera, behind the camera, and in his private life, as the family man who could be the guy next door.

While Brandon Longwood’s chosen occupation may not be a parent’s dream for his child, Longwood’s parents can’t fault his nonconformist path. Longwood’s parents were active participants of the non-violent student protest movements in the 60s. Memories of Black Nationalist dinner parties, revolutionary discourse, and the overwhelming desire for change are what Longwood associates with childhood. Upwardly mobile black professionals living in Washington D.C., Longwood’s parents had the means to provide him with a private education in a predominantly white school, though at night he always returned home to his black neighborhood. A product of two cultures, Longwood learned an important attribute of documentary filmmaking – observation. From his parents, he learned to challenge prevalent ideologies and be true to one’s self.

A self-described entrepreneur from an early age, Longwood has always looked to express himself through his work. Holding a bachelor’s degree in Music Theory from the University of Pittsburgh, several of Longwood’s jobs include musical expression, including founding a community organization to educate children in music and digital recording. Even Longwood’s office-located jobs allowed him to flex his imagination. A career as both an independent and corporate web designer helped open Longwood’s eyes to a new world of sexual awakening birthed by the Internet, where people could satisfy their wildest fantasies.

Though Longwood often used the Internet as a playground to exercise his open marriage privileges, it was upon his wife’s urging, that he realized the economic and sexual opportunities available as an adult performer. Longwood’s wife desired to watch videos of him pleasuring other women as he did nightly for her – a staple of their marriage still enjoyed today. Noting a lack of aesthetics and interactivity in most adult websites, Longwood designed a site to house his movies focusing on quality of presentation and authentic sexual performances. As Longwood’s popularity rose, he found himself filming scenes more frequently, as well assisting other performers in designing their sites through his company, Major F-ing Star. Soon Longwood’s passion turned into a full-time job, as he became one of the top male indie stars in adult.

Residing on the East Coast, Brandon Longwood is far removed from the California porn hub. In fact, as a producer of independent pornography, Longwood held an us verses them mentality when discussing the large studios located in the San Fernando Valley. By filming Staying Power, Longwood wished to present an in-depth understanding of the intricacies of the industry responsible for generating billions of dollars a year. Through his interviews with leading performers and executives, Longwood developed a greater sense of respect for the more mainstream side of adult entertainment, while realizing they were all experiencing the same difficulties plaguing the industry—piracy, censorship, prejudice, and fear.

Brandon Longwood is a husband, father, college graduate, black man, musician, pornographer, and filmmaker. All of the pieces of Longwood’s life influence one another, while none solely define him. Longwood is complex, as are all the people performing in, producing, and distributing adult movies…as are the millions of people consuming porn on a regular basis. As a documentarian, Longwood is trying to establish a level of intimacy and personality to the adult industry, so viewers see faces and souls, in addition to fornication. When his movies end and the credits roll, Longwood hopes he’s begun to chip away at the stigmas of sexuality and porn, while inspiring open conversations otherwise unspoken. After all, the world would be a better place if the time spent advocating violence, hate, and ignorance were spent having sex.
