Dr. DeFranza started studying gender and religion because she grew up in a conservative Christian environment where women weren't teachers and she needed to know what she was allowed to do. Years later she discovered people whose questions were more complicated than her own. Her dissertation became the book "Sex Difference in Christian Theology: Male, Female, and Intersex in the Image of God." She co-founded IntersexandFaith.org with Lianne Simon in 2017.
