I am an American Book Award-winning author, a screenwriter and a producer. I am also Cosby Chair in the Humanities at Spelman College.

After years as a novelist and screenwriter, I never expected to produce my own movie--but I realized that if I wanted to see my work adapted to screen, I would have to give myself a start. The result is Danger Word, my first short film, which I am co-producing with my husband, Steven Barnes ("The Outer Limits," "The New Twilight Zone") and one of my best friends, director Luchina Fisher. I am also inspired by independent filmmakers like Ava DuVernay. This has been an amazing experience!
