Slater Jewell-Kemker

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

My name is Slater, and I'm a 19 year old award-winning filmmaker and climate activist based on a farm outside of Toronto, Canada. I'm currently making a feature length doc (with an awesome online platform/outreach component in the works) on the global youth climate movement called "An Inconvenient Youth".

As I've grown up, I've combined my love of film and story telling with environmentalism, and the result is this movie and a desire to tell the stories of young people and climate leaders living on the front lines of climate change. My goal is to effectively give my generation a voice and put a human face - something we connect to on a heart level as human beings - to the abstract, bizarre and scary crisis we know as climate change, to take it beyond numbers on a page.

I've released segments along the way that have screened at film festivals, online and in classrooms around the world to over 10,000 young people. In addition, I've given numerous workshops on filmmaking and activism to empower my generation to take action on climate change and truly have a say in their own lives to change the world. I'm a passionate dancer and dreamer who believes that love, empathy and real, deep connections to each other and the planet will change the world for the better and put us all on a path to a truly caring, just and sustainable society.

Selected Awards:

United Nations Earth Day Trustee Award - 2007 - cinematic eco-activist

Winner My Hero Film Festival - 2008 - Ron Kovic Peace Activist Award

Children Uniting Nations Dream Award - 2011- cinematic eco-activist

Winner Gertrude Lowengren Award for Best Film, TIFF Jump Cuts - 2011- An Inconvenient Youth - Cancun

Winner Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, "Best Student Film" - 2011- An Inconvenient Youth - Cancun

Winner My Hero Film Festival - 2011- Youth Achievement Award - “An Inconvenient Youth - Cancun”

Creative Visions Foundation - 2011 - Dan Eldon Fellowship - cinematic eco-activist

We Are Family Foundation - 2012 - Global Teen Leader - cinematic eco-activist
