Michael Neal moved to Maui from San Francisco in the 1970s to surf the big waves. He’s had a variety of careers throughout his life including restaurants, commercial painting, ministry, and remodeling. He’d always been good with his hands, but it wasn’t until he turned fifty that he decided to really explore his talent for woodworking and photography.

His first major pieces Welcome Home (a huge driftwood log hand carved to depict the parable of the Prodigal Son) and Island Rocker (Earpod and Koa sculpted rocker) were accepted into the prestigious Art Maui Show in 2005 and 2006. He now builds custom furniture, turns carved bowls and makes amazing sculptures such as a life-sized lionfish in native Koa which was featured in the Viewpoints Gallery’s Watershed show.

In photography he’s focused on the rare birds ( also seen in the Viewpoints Gallery shows), nature and big surf of Maui, (as seen in Surfline, Surfer, XXL, and other Magizines and Websites) often combining his unique talents by making organic, native hardwood frames for his pictures.

Michael lives Upcountry with his wife Toby, where they’ve raised two awesome kids. Mike enjoys making custom pieces and commissions are welcome. Mike says to anyone considering his work, “I hope you enjoy my work, as much as I did creating it.”
