Devyn's biggest fan!

I met Devyn when I volunteered at a playgroup for children with Autism in 2009. It was then that Heather (Devyn's mom) asked if I would be interested in watching Devyn once a week. Well once a week turned into 5-7 days a week and I am so happy to be a part of their lives. Devyn has taught me so much and she sure knows how to make someone smile. I am lucky to have been able to be a part of her journey and have been there every step of the way!

Meet Devyn's Mom, Heather:

I worked as a school psychologist specializing in Autism long before Devyn was born... feel like all those years of training and experience happened so I could be Devyn's Mom.

I am so proud of all her accomplishments... Each milestone is special. Many children with Angelmans never walk or speak, but Devyn likes to prove doctors wrong and she has amazed so many people as she beats the odds.

One of the best interventions we have tried to date, was to get her a service dog that was specially trained to improve her independence (with walking, sitting, etc.) and to alert us when she was in distress (e.g., having a seizure or experiencing respiratory complications). We received Hannah in Jan 2011 from Wilderwood and our lives are forever changed. Hannah has improved her quality of life in so many ways we didn't let ourselves imagine before her arrival. Devyn now has the strength to walk everywhere (no longer needing her medical stroller or to be carried). She proudly holds the handle on her doggy's harness and off they go. The tethering system is amazing. We used to always have our hands on Devyn (to keep her safe). Now she can only go as far as the tether and she respects that. She has learned to focus on what is going on around her rather than being distracted by the person holding her still. There are so many wonderful things Hannah has done... it was a devastating blow when the district removed her from Devyn's IEP. She had attended school with Devyn for 18 months and things were going really well. We were angry and upset, but as we have gathered information, we are feeling more confident. The laws are on our side. We will fight this, we will be heard!

As a single mom of two wonderful little girls, I know it is important to teach them to fight what is right and to speak for those who have no voice. I am positive that others will be able to learn from our story and maybe their path will have less challenges and obstacles to overcome.

We are forever grateful for everyone's support. THANK YOU!!
