High School Students Need Science Fair Funding!

We are 11th grade students who have participated in the science fair program in the Beaverton School District for 5- now almost 6- years. This program has provided a scientific outlet for adolescents since 2003, and has resulted in projects that improved ways of attaining green energy, made large contributions to medical science, and has helped solve problems within communities on both a local and national scale. Science fair allows high school kids to make connections within their community and opens doorways into their future through scholarships, grants, and work experience.

In the past my partner and I have won many small prizes at the regional and state science fair, as well as placing 1st overall in our category. Currently we are working on our own project "The effects of elevated carbon in a controlled environment on the colonization of mycorrhizal fungi in Oregon native and invasive plants". Normally our project would be supported by school funding, but due to recent budget cuts purchasing materials needed would have to come out of pocket. However, we aren't going to let this lack of funding stop us from achieving our goal, and hope to be able to create a project worthy of the international science fair and acquire scholarships to help us go to college.

To make a project worthy of this, we need to improve the scale of our project and obtain enough materials to create 2 large, airtight huts made from pvc pipes and greenhouse plastic to grow our samples in. We have already contacted local supply stores for donations, however it won't be enough to cover all costs. Donated money would be used to purchase these materials, as well as the CO2 needed to pump into the huts. Below is an exact list of what we need and the cost:

Hut materials- $160

3/4th inch 10 ft pvc pipe

20 90 degree elbows with side outlet

10 x 20 ft clear drop cloth

80 black nursery containers

Heavy Duty Duct Tape

CO2- $450-$600

$30-$40 per refill x 15 refills

Transportation- $270

5 month project at PSU = 5 one month Trimet Bus passes ($27 each)

Cost of printing board- $40

PLEASE SHARE OUR LINK AND SUPPORT ANY WAY YOU CAN :)
