Biography

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Bongkeun Kwon was born in Chunchon, South Korea. During his sophomore year in high school, he began taking private composition lessons to enter a highly ranked university in Seoul.&nbsp;With the help of a private teacher who was also a professional writer, he began to visualize the invisible, that is, the world of art. He listened to stories of artists, understood the characters in novels and felt the emotion of a work of art. He became a dreamer, immersed in feeding his creativity with new materials.&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="p1"><span class="s1"><br /> At that point, of all the ironies in his life, he decided that filmmaking and directing was the best means of channeling his creative energy. However, he had to delay pursuing his dream until his college graduation due to his parent&rsquo;s strong will for him to finish off attending the renowned university he was accepted to. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; <br /> </span></p> <p class="p1"><span class="s1">Instead of studying film, he received BA in Russian Literature and Language from Seoul National University with a graduation thesis on &ldquo;Dualistic theory of Russian Culturology shown in Andrei Tarkovskii&rsquo;s films&rdquo;. <br /> <br /> Yet the greatest shift in his life came through the expansion of his interest to the field of art. He became fascinated by drama, classical music, opera and modern dance. When Bongkeun attended Moscow University as an exchange student for one year, he saw more than 150 performances in addition to viewing all the classic movies at the Kino museum.<br /> <br /> From 2006-2007, he served as an assistant director in theater company called &lsquo;Myungpum&rsquo; in order to understand actors. He worked closely with the professional actors for the stage &lsquo;Gogol Trilogy: Viy, Diary of madman and old world landowners&rsquo; at various theaters including National Theater of South Korea.<br /> <br /> While he pursued MFA in Directing in Chung-Ang University, he wrote and directed &lsquo;Pride in Red&rsquo;, &lsquo;Between the two&rsquo; and &lsquo;Un-sharable&rsquo;. He also expanded his experience by participating in the feature film &lsquo;A worker, Daesoo Heo who doesn&rsquo;t want to be Grandpa&rsquo; as the assistant director and shooting an independent Sci-Fi feature film &lsquo;Uninvited&rsquo; as the director of photography. <br /> <br /> Currently he is a MFA candidate at Columbia University in screenwriting.&nbsp; His first short film made in NYC is called &lsquo;Singing in the park&rsquo; and was selected as a short film showcase in the NYC TV program, which aired in August, 2011&nbsp; along with his interview.<br /> <br /> Bongkeun was hired to direct three music videos for Jungbum Kim, a renowned singer &amp; composer in South Korea, in order to promote his upcoming album. The trilogy music videos were officially selected for the opening screening for the 5th Great Short Film Festival in Korea, 2011. He was favorably written by various news articles. <br /> <br /> Bongkeun won the Best Screenplay award from 2005 DMZ film festival in South Korea with his short film, &lsquo;The escaping diary of the captured&rsquo;, which deals with moral conflicts of captured South Korean who tries to cross the border without notifying his North Korean wife.</span></p>
