My name is Douglas Zimmerman and I am a photojournalist and soccer fanatic. I’m asking for your help to fund my photography essay on soccer fans across America this upcoming World Cup.
The World Cup is the most amazing happening in the world. No other event has the ability to bring together people from diverse backgrounds and
different nationalities to celebrate a common passion: Soccer.
I have dedicated my photography
life to documenting the soccer fans during the World Cup. Although I
have been able to photograph the past three World Cups, my travels have
self-funded. It has been a labor of love.
This year, I’ve found myself unable to make the trip to Brazil but I am excited by the opportunity. It will bring me back to being a soccer fan in America, just like I was in 1994 when I lived in Washington D.C. watching all the international students at my university glued to their televisions during the games; or the Saudi Arabia fans celebrating their victory at the embassy in DC; or Brazil fans flooding the streets of Georgetown after winning the World Cup.
So instead of photographing the fans traveling to Brazil for the World Cup I want to continue my photography essay on the melting pot of soccer fans in America as they experience the tournament from this country.
My plan is to cover several locations during the World Cup, including the East Coast, Midwest, and Southern California. I want to photograph individual soccer fanatics and communities that will be following the games in Brazil. I hope to show that although few believe that America is a soccer country, there are plenty of soccer fans in every corner of this nation. And their story is waiting to be told.
I hope to raise funds to cover the costs of traveling along the West Coast, East Coast, Midwest and Great Plains. My expenses will include airfares, accommodations, rental cars and local transportation, and gifts for the donors of this campaign. The goal is the minimum amount that I would need for this photography essay. If I can exceed the goal then I can include more communities in my project.
I will regularly update my blog with photographs so you can follow along.
I appreciate any help you can give. If you can't contribute financially, please spread the word through social media.
Thank you and enjoy the World Cup!!!
