Hybrid Vigor is an entirely crowdfunded feature film shot on location in Latvia. Last year we had a Kickstarter to raise the money to shoot our film. Now we are raising the money to finish and we have put together an all star team to do it.

  • When our first Kickstarter ended last year only 10 narrative film campaigns had more total backers than us.

  • To date 1,106 people from 37 countries have already backed us.

  • Our first campaign won Indiewire's Project of the Day and Project of the Week contests.

  • We have backed over 200 other crowdfunding campaigns ourselves.

  • We have shot ~70% of the film so far.

  • The majority of the money being raise now is going towards post-production.

Our Team

The team we have put together to finish Hybrid Vigor is amazing. They have worked on Oscar winning films with some of the best directors in the business. With your help our little crowdfunded micro-budget indie film is going to get a top Hollywood finish!

We have a literal Dream Team of talent on board to finish Hybrid Vigor.

Composer Hanan Townshend

Hanan Townshend is on board to do our score. Hanan is fast rising film composer born in rural New Zealand, but now based in Austin, Texas. He did music for Terrence Malick's Palme d'Or winning film Tree of Life and was also the composer for Malick's latest film To The Wonder.

Hanan's music reflects the broad background of inspiration from which he draws – the poetic soundscapes of his home country, the eager patterns of popular music, and the refinement of classical training and studies in art composition. Because of this, he has a penchant for approaching film music from a less conventional perspective and producing clever, memorable pieces that support just as much the picturesque as they do the auditory experience.

Here is a sample of Hanan's work on To The Wonder:

The Film

Hybrid Vigor - The Film

I moved halfway around the world to a country most people can't find on a map to make this film.

Hybrid Vigor is a film about life, death, violence, morality, immortality, love, and loss in the USSR during Soviet times and in present day Latvia.

A mysterious girl is found living in a forest in Latvia. After being captured by the police she is taken to a mental institution in Riga. She doesn’t speak, but seems to understand everything. She doesn’t sleep, but never acts tired. Who is she and where is she from? Could she be connected to the disappearance of a little girl in the same area 20 years earlier? Most important, is she dangerous?

Hybrid Vigor stars Velta Buka and Jevgenija Mirosnicenko. It’s written, produced and directed by Brandon Fowler.

My Story

My name is Brandon. My first film was a low budget independent film I wrote when I was 18 years-old and directed when I was 20. The film co-starred Dee Wallace, Dennis Haskins and Joyce DeWitt. It was professionally done with a large crew of around 30 people and shot on 35mm film with Panavision cameras. Unfortunately the film negative and sound was stolen and the film has never been completed. I was able to recover the film negative, but was never able to get the sound.

A few years ago I Executive Produced the critically acclaimed arthouse film Loren Cass. Variety called it, “A starkly radical film debut of uncommon power and artistic principle.” The New York Times said it was, “Remarkable… One of the year’s great discoveries.” The film was solely the director’s vision. I was just there to help support the talent I saw in him.

I learned a lot working on my first film and even more in the years since. I got my start as a writer/director in this business at a very young age, but lost more than 10 years due to my first film being stolen and unfinished. The last decade did not go to waste though. I made a plan for how I would make my next film, Hybrid Vigor, and now I’m executing it.

We have been shooting off and on most of this year. Well over half of the film has been shot. Over 1,000 people from 33 countries have backed us financially so far. I can’t thank you all enough. It’s an incredibly humbling feeling to know that so many people have helped me achieve my dream. This film has become a reality. With your help we can see it through to completion.

Hybrid Vigor

Crowdfunding is the future of Independent Film and Social Media is leveling the playing field.

I moved halfway around the world to a country most people can't find on a map to make Hybrid Vigor. The only reason this project has been possible is because of the amazing people from all over the world that have backed us. I really can't thank you all enough.

When our first Kickstarter campaign ended last year only 10 narrative film projects had more total backers than us. Most of those 10 had some sort of celebrity connection or built in audience. What we accomplished with that first campaign was amazing. Now we are taking it to another level.

Technology has gotten to the point where you can literally shoot a movie out of a backpack with a skeleton crew and get amazing results, but to finish a film at a professional level it is still very expensive.

Our first Kickstarter raised the minimum we needed to shoot. The majority of the money that we're raising now with this new campaign is going towards post-production. Some will go towards additional filming.

The package of people we have put together to finish Hybrid Vigor is amazing. They have worked on Oscar winning films with some of my favorite directors.

It's cool to back a celebrity crowdfunding campaign, but it's even more cool to back an underdog.

Now $100,000 is a lot of money. But Veronica Mars raised that in about 20 minutes. Zach Braff did it in less than an hour.

We have 30 days... (but it's not going to be easy)

I know it's cool to back a celebrity Kickstarter campaign. But it's even more cool... to back an underdog.

Crowdfunding IS the future of independent film and Social Media is leveling the playing field.

We're not going to get help from the press. I don't have celebrity friends that will help promote this. Hybrid Vigor is 100% crowdfunded and is as indie as it gets. The only reason our film is possible is because of your support. You'll be able to look back and say, "I made this movie happen."

You back us with any amount of money (even a few dollars) and we will reach our goal. And our little crowdfunded micro-budget indie film... is going to get a million dollar Hollywood finish at a fraction of the normal cost. And then we're going to bring the movie to you. And it's going to blow people's minds when it happens. So, let's show people what crowdfunding is really about.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did you choose “Flexible Funding”?

Two reasons:

  1. If we chose a Fixed Funding campaign Indiegogo still immediately charges you. The only difference is they will refund you if we do not reach our goal. Another drawback of a Fixed Funding campaign is that backers can only use PayPal. With Flexible Funding there are multiple payment options.
  2. The majority of Hybrid Vigor has been shot and I know we will be able to deliver on all your Perks even if we do not reach our goal.

Why are you doing one large campaign and not several smaller campaigns?

Because if we reach our goal I can forget about fundraising/marketing and for the next few months put 100% of my effort into making the best film possible. It's very difficult to divide my time between both tasks because they each require a very different way of thinking.

What happens if you don't reach your goal?

Our goal is more of a target than a minimum. If we do not reach our goal we will later raise more funds and/or scale down what we need to do to finish the film. That would mean fewer days of additional shooting, less practical special effects, fewer vfx shots, a 2k finish instead of a 4k finish, less time to mix sound and fewer musical pieces recorded with an orchestra. It will also take longer to complete the film, but it will be completed.

I'm leery of Flexible Funding campaigns on Indiegogo. What makes your campaign different?

I've put years of my life, my entire life savings and everything I own of value in the world into making this film. We have already shot the majority of the film and I'm on location right now working on it. There is no chance this film will not be finished. Every perk we promise will be delivered. Guaranteed.
