My birth name is Kevin Gift. My twin brother's birth name was Wendel Patrick. He did not survive the birth. I never knew him, and yet I always knew I was a twin, and actually asked my parents about it before they told me.
Wendel Patrick is the name I use for all things Hip Hop and Electronica. As Wendel Patrick I've released two critically acclaimed albums that have been featured by VIBE Magazine, XLR8R Magazine, RE:UP Magazine, URB Magazine and other numerous publications. Kevin Gift is the name I use for all things piano related...usually classical and jazz, but not always. I have fans of each that don't know the other one exists. As a musician I have been fortunate to travel and perform all over the world as a classical, hip hop and jazz musician.
Three of the four albums in this project, "Travel", "Passage", and "JDWP" are Wendel Patrick releases. "20.TEN." is a Kevin Gift release of solo piano works. Working on all four of these albums simultaneously over the last year has been exhausting, but simultaneously the most rewarding thing I've ever done both artistically and musically. All four albums are very different. "Passage" plays along the lines of an acoustic album by The Roots, or something akin to "The Philadelphia Experiment" released in 2001. Every track on "Travel" was either written or conceived in a different city while on tour. "JDWP" is a J Dilla tribute project featuring my own arrangements of several of my favorite J Dilla sample based tunes, recreated without any sampling. All proceeds from "JDWP" will go to the J Dilla Foundation, who's mission is to help fund inner-city music programs and provide scholarships to students attending schools that have progressive music curricula.
This is the best music I've ever recorded. I want the world to hear it, and this campaign will help raise the funds needed to mix and master the albums as well as pay for manufacturing costs, publicity campaigns in publications such as FADER Magazine, Rolling Stone Magazine, Blender, VIBE Magazine, XLR8R and URB, time needed to record, travel expenses for collaborating artists, and if enough money is raised, the ability to bring all of this music to a city near you in a live format.
There is a lot that goes into making a recording, both during the recording process and after, and much of it can be costly. As an independent artist I make my own decisions about the music I want to record without having criteria dictated to me by a label. There is nothing requiring me to make something "catchy" at the expense of the music I wish to create. I see this as an ideal situation. Reaching the broader public with music in such an environment can be challenging however, which is where adequate publicity and marketing becomes a major factor. A half page ad in a magazine such as FADER can run into the thousands but can have a sizeable impact on spreading the word about a particular album, let alone four. $8000 dollars has been budgeted for publicity and marketing. Physical printing of CD's are usually done by the thousand and cost $1100 per CD or $4400 for all four. If enough money is raised, I will be printing physical copies of all four albums. Vynil pressings will take place as well, and the cost for a run of 800 is $1200. Mixing and mastering of the album has been budgeted at $2500. Travel expenses for collaborating artists has been budgeted at $1500, and mixing and mastering has been budgeted at $1500. Digital distribution for all four albums will cost approximately $300.
There are numerous perks that you will get as a supporter of this project ranging all the way from pre-ordering the albums at a discount up to Wendel Patrick music production for an album of your own. There are also opportunities to receive other large perks such as music production from Wendel Patrick for an individual track or an EP, album covers on beautifully wrapped gallery canvas for your walls, or individual production tutuorials via Skype from Wendel Patrick. Be sure to scroll through them all and find what you like!
