July 2 Update:

We've been busy the last few weeks! Filming interviews, Civil War Re-enactments, historic buildings and artifiacts . . .  things are really coming together!

Below are some short video reels that highlight some of the work we did at Historic Adventist Village, the Battle of Blountville re-enactment, and most recently from the Battle of Mossy Creek re-enactment!

Please pass the videos or this page's link on to your friends and family. We want as many people as possible to hear about this project and join us in support before time runs out!

Chris Small, Producer

Introduction

Hi. I’m Chris Small, producer of War in Heaven, War on Earth. You might know me as Abraham Lincoln (whom I’ve been performing for over a decade and a half), or you might know me as a pastor or a university teacher back in Michigan. Maybe you know my brother Loren Small (the director of War in Heaven, War on Earth). Like me, he has a passion for telling stories . . . and we've found a fascinating one in the dual sesquicentennial (150th Anniversary) of both the Civil War and the founding of the Seventh-day Adventist Church!

It doesn’t really matter whether you know us or not. Maybe you’re just passionate about Civil War history. Maybe you’re a documentary film buff. Maybe you’re a dedicated Seventh-day Adventist who wants to see your church’s story told. Whatever your story is, now's your chance to get in on something really big . . . a story about ordinary people who did extraordinary things in the face of the darkest days of American history.

We believe this story needs to be told, and we’ve stepped out in faith and already enlisted the help of many individuals who are contributing a great deal in time and service. In fact, we’ve already begun shooting interviews! But now we need your help in raising the last $20,000 to complete the film. No contribution is too small. Ten dollars can cover a meal for one crew member. Fifty dollars can provide an LED light for the shoot. One hundred dollars can be put towards gathering archival photos. It’s all essential to finish filming the story of the birth of the Seventh-day Adventist Church during the Civil War.

War In Heaven War On Earth

You’ve heard the expression: “unless we learn from history, we are doomed to repeat it.” Perhaps one of the Adventist pioneers, Ellen G. White, had a similar thought when she famously wrote, “We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history” (Life Sketches, p.196).

Right now, I invite you to join us in remembering our American history and the history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church by making your contribution to War in Heaven, War on Earth: The Birth of the Seventh-day Adventist Church During the American Civil War.

My most sincere thanks,

Chris Small Signature

War In Heaven War On Earth

About the Film

War In Heaven, War On Earth will be a feature length documentary film that explores the converging experiences of a nation at war and the formation of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, a religious group who found themselves wrestling with the questions of conscientious objection, the spectre of slavery, and the myriad social and political issues of the time. As the Civil War engulfed America, the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists was established, and the issues of faith and duty to country clashed as conflict threatened to divide both nation and church.

Featuring beautiful cinematography, historical re-enactment, and thoughtful interviews, the film will artfully examine a microcosm of religious, civilian and military experiences during the Civil War, expanding our understanding of a momentous and pivotal time in American history.

Help Make the Film

You can help make War in Heaven, War on Earth a reality -- we are only $20,000 away!

The producers have raised over $50,000, mostly of “in kind” contributions (donations of services or goods which will help produce the film). However, we still need approximately $20,000 of additional funding to finish making War in Heaven, War on Earth. Because of the important subject, the producers have "stepped out in faith" by already beginning the film, confident that your help will carry us to the final stages of making the film.

Any contribution will help, whether personal or corporate. No amount is too small. As Chris said in his letter, ten dollars can cover a meal for one crew member. Fifty dollars can provide an LED light for the shoot. One hundred dollars can be put towards gathering archival photos. We could finish easily with four contributors at $5000 each, twenty at $1000 each, or even one thousand contributors at $20 each! No matter what level you can give at, every dollar will be put back into the film and will be hugely appreciated.

Spread the Word

The other thing you can do that will greatly help is to spread the word. By sharing either this page, our Facebook Page, or our website with your friends and family, you are helping this campaign to reach more potential contributors.

War In Heaven War On EarthQ. What topics will be discussed in the film?

A. Topics of discussion--in no specific order--will include (but not be limited to):

  • What is the historical context of the Seventh-day Adventist movement?
  • What hurdles were there to organization of a church in the early 1860s, both internally and externally?
  • How and why does a grass root religious movement form into a legal organization?
  • How did printed publications connect people across state and territorial lines in the 1840’s-1860’s?
  • What did the Seventh-day Adventist leaders of the time have to say about slavery, abolition, war, American politics, and military service? How did these views compare to other popular views of the time?
  • How did Adventists balance loyalty to country and a desire to serve with their conscientious objection to bearing arms?
  • How did Adventists view the war in terms of their beliefs about the end times, and how did this impact their views of the social and political issues?
  • What specific events in the Civil War directly affected Adventists?
  • What specific events and national ideas did Adventists influence in the civil war?
  • How did the Seventh-day Adventist organization compare to other denominations of the time?
  • How did the Civil War change religion in America?
  • What is a conscientious objector, and what was the governmental position on conscientious objectors before and during the war?
  • How did the draft impact conscientious objectors?
  • How did Abraham Lincoln and other leaders interact with religious groups during the Civil War?
  • What role did religion play in American politics, war decisions, and amongst the troops?

Q. Why make this movie now?

A. Now is the perfect time to tell this story. 2013 is the pivotal year of the Civil War Sesquicentennial commemorating the years 1861-1865. It also marks the 150th anniversary of the official formation of the Seventh-day Adventist Church; on May 21, 1863, the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists was formed and the movement became an official organization.
