Utilize Health UPDATE:
What is Utilize Health?
Utilize Health is a platform that matches patients with neurological disabilities to the therapies and facilities they need to maximize their potential for recovery. Think OpenTable or Hotels.com, but for patients and facilities/therapies.
Utilize Health Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Jessica Harthcock, was paralyzed at age 17 while practicing gymnastics. Doctors said she would never regain function. Jessica and her family spent several years traveling in search of highly specialized rehabilitation treatments. Through years of hard work and determination, Jessica learned to walk again.
After experiencing difficulties finding resources and therapies, Jessica vowed to create a tool that could help other patients find the resources they needed without wasting time, energy and financial resources. Thus, Utilize Health was born.
Milestones - 100 Patients
Utilize Health recently matched more than 100 patients to therapies and facilities across the country. The Utilize Health team completed this process manually (essentially by looking at spreadsheets and other paper databases). Utilize Health currently has a backlog of patients and families waiting to be matched. Automating the matching process through our web application will allow Utilize Health to match thousands of patients! This is why we need YOUR help!!
The funds you give will go directly to the development and creation of the web application. Additional funds are needed to operate the website and hire Patient Advocates for the first six months.
Here's what some of the 100 patients and their families have said about Utilize Health since the process began:
“I had no clue these therapies existed. Thank you so much for my recommendations (matches)....For the first time in a long time, I am excited to see what the future holds for me.”
"I wanted to update you on my son's progress. Since Jeffrey started therapy at his new treatment center, he has progressed leaps and bounds. He STOOD for the first time all by himself...I am so thankful we found you."
"I had given up on recovery years ago, but you've inspired me to try again, and for that I will forever be grateful."
Problem Utilize Health Solves
Patients lack knowledge of potentially life changing treatments because some therapies are considered new, and they are not well publicized. Utilize Health solves this problem by creating smart matching technology that helps patients:
- Learn about treatments
- Locate facilities with those treatments
- Engage with that facility by scheduling an appointment through the Utilize Health platform
6 ConditionsUtilize Health currently helps patients with 6 neurological conditions: stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis. These 6 different conditions encompass more than
11 million people in the United States.
As Utilize Health grows, we hope to expand our services to other patient populations in the future.
How Will the Funds be Used?
Our initial goal is $60K. The funds will be used for web application development. The biggest drivers behind the cost of the website are:
- A proprietary algorithm, using several data sets to match patient conditions to therapy options and the qualified facilities, taking into account financial and geographic constraints.
- A specialized user interface which is both ADA compliant and specifically designed for users with various neurological disabilities.
- HIPAA compliance for security and privacy of personal health information.
All of these compound the complexity of the development and take what might appear on the surface as a less expensive app and make it more expensive to develop.
Our first stretch goal is $100K. We need the additional funds for maintenance and operational expenses (i.e., hiring Patient Advocates for the first 6 months).
Web Development: We have contracted with a firm in Nashville, TN. They are ready to start building the web application and matching algorithms as soon as we give them the green light. Some of the funding will also be used towards hiring a User Experience (UX) Developer. As you can imagine, many Utilize Health users will have limited upper extremity mobility. We want to ensure an easy and seamless user experience for anyone who uses Utilize Health's website.
If we do not reach our entire goal, we will have to critically limit the scope of our web application. Certain features, like scheduling an appointment directly through the Utilize Health platform, may not be available. The more funds we raise, the more intuitive the web application will be. In addition, Utilize Health will be able to offer more features for our users. Below are some mocks ups of the website: (Note: This is subject to change based on the amount of funding we receive.)_________________________________________________________________________
How Does it Work?
Utilize Health is incredibly easy to use! After signing up, a user will be prompted to go through the following steps:
1. Create a User Profile: A user will be prompted to fill out a personal profile. You'll provide us with easy information like name, date of birth, and zip code.
2. Fill Out a Health Questionnaire: A user will be prompted to fill out a health questionnaire. You'll be asked questions about your injury/prognosis, date of onset, etc. You set the guidelines for us. Are you willing to travel? If so, how far? We will use all this information to best help you. The more information you provide us with, the better we can assist you in finding the best therapies and facilities for you!
3. Browse Your Matches: Based on the information you provided us, we match you with the best possible facilities and therapies. Click on each match to read about the types of therapies and treatments the facility offers.
4. Schedule a Visit: Choose the facility that you want to visit. Every facility is different. Every patient is different. After reading through your matches, you choose the facility that best suits your needs.
What is a Patient Advocate Subscription?
Utilize Health offers a baseline matching service FREE to all of its members. This is the core of what we do. We also understand that some patients need more than that. In addition to our free service, Utilize Health offers a paid upgrade subscription service for members. Think of this service as more of a concierge-like service for patients.
Patient Advocates can assist patients with obtaining scripts from their physicians, providing additional research on a particular type of therapy, and/or discuss patient matches more in depth.
Having a Patient Advocate Subscription allows a patient or family member to schedule a call anytime they want with one of Utilize Health's Patient Advocates. Our Patient Advocates will also send periodic emails to check in to make sure things are going well.

11 million people in the United States have a physical disability due to a neurological condition such as a stroke or a spinal cord injury. The types of conditions that Utilize Health helps are life-altering.
As you read above, Utilize Health has already matched more than 100 patients to therapies and facilities across the United States. Here's some more of what patients and their family members have said:
“You have given me something that no one has been able to give me - hope. After my son suffered a closed head traumatic brain injury, the doctors said he would remain in a vegetative state. My wife and I have been searching for treatment options since his accident. When we were referred to Utilize Health, our Patient Advocate helped us learn about what options were out there. Thank you and to all of the Utilize Health Team.”
"It's been 21 years since I have participated in PT and OT. I look forward to starting a new kind of physical therapy."
