Hello! Thank you for taking the time to learn about our new farmer’s market in Hudson. We're a group of young farmers, bakers, craftspeople, chefs, and artisans working together to co-create the Upstreet Market.
This market will be held on Wednesday evenings from 4-7pm during the summer and early fall, with the potential to extend into the spring and late fall in the future. We're looking to obtain permits for use of the park on 7th Street between Warren and Columbia. We want to enhance this rarely used green space and create a fun atmosphere for all to take part. It's a convenient location for full time residents, commuters, and visitors.
Nestled in the mid-Hudson Valley, Hudson is the largest city in Columbia County, a region rich with fertile soil and creative people. Our town is filled with families, entrepreneurs, artists, professionals, and folks from every walk of life, it is also a thriving home for a variety of small businesses: the streets are lined with unique restaurants, clothing and antique shops, alternative health co-ops and more. Our socially vibrant community frequently hosts a variety of events, parades, and family activities making this an attractive destination.
While there is much abundance in our community, we feel we are lacking an important feature: convenient and consistent availability of fresh food within the city limits. With no grocery options within walking distance of the city center, it's difficult for many to obtain healthy food on a regular basis. Currently, a successful and bustling market is held each Saturday, and we're looking to increase the opportunities for Hudson's residents to purchase fresh local food and other practical goods throughout the week.
We're striving to promote our local economy by creating a community space to connect farmers, producers, and vendors to connect with their customer base. Numerous businesses surrounding the square on upper Warren Street have expressed their intention to actively participate in the market evenings, and help create this market as a community gathering space to network, collaborate, and further enliven this part of town.
Our plan is to host local evening entertainment, and offer an assortment of nutritious prepared foods from new vendors. Some of the Saturday market's long-time favorites, and even some of the adjacent food establishments will be able to participate in this outdoor event in hopes of bringing neighbors together to enjoy the seasons and local bounty.
The Upstreet Market organization will advertise the market, spread the word about this opportunity to other local businesses, and let our community know we're striving hard to get more access to food in our neighborhood.
By supporting farmers markets, you're not only helping yourself, your friends, and your family to live a healthy lifestyle, you are also supporting small farms and business. The more we can do to create and support a grassroots economy, the more we can become independent of our current corporate and toxic food system. At the Upstreet Market, you can meet your producers and know exactly where and how your food was created. With an average of 1,500 miles of travel, most food found in a "traditional" grocery store has little-to-no positive impact on your immediate surroundings and provides profit to large agribusinesses and conglomerates. We are striving to turn that model around and share the sustainable fruits of our labor with those closest to us, and we invite you to be part of this change!
Thank you for supporting us and we hope to see you this summer in the park!
