With your help, a new DIY space with a proven commitment to the underground community will re-open in central Orange County.
A refuge for those on the margins of mainstream society: a music space with skateboarding and art, owned by musicians, skateboarders, and artists, and run with input from and in the best interests of the underground community that it serves. That is my dream.
My name is Mark Waters and I've spent most of my life following my dreams. I've been pretty lucky to have worked in the skateboarding, music, and film worlds my entire adult life. When I was introduced to Paul Hoffmann at Unit B, I knew that I'd found another great opportunity: to create something unique in Orange County -- a place where bands, skaters, and fans could get weird in the ways that only we understand. And with the community that quickly grew around Unit B, we were able to build something awesome.
Like it was for many people in this community, skateboarding and punk music were my first loves, and the underground scenes surrounding punk and skating were my first external family. With Unit B, I was able to develop an actual environment where the safety and comfort of an external family came very naturally. That environment was very important to me, and I’ve learned that it was important to a lot of people involved in Unit B. I’ve become obsessed with recreating that environment.
When the doors were closed at Unit B, it hurt. But I felt like it was an opportunity again -- a chance to build on what we'd done at Unit B, and make it better, make it completely legal, and basically build a new spot that was designed to be what we want. Not a skatepark with a stage, but a community space designed for live music, skateboarding, art shows, record swaps, a library/bookstore, a recording studio, as well as rehearsal studios and anything else that we feel the need to create. This is a community space like no other, and we've proven that this concept works.By working with local bands, bookers, volunteers and other members of the community, we're on the path to creating this new Unit B. And we need your help to make it as great as we all deserve.
We are hoping to raise $XX,XXX through this campaign, and we will be looking for investors for the remainder of the initial costs. Here is exactly how we will spend the initial contributions:
First and last month's rent and security deposit.
Materials for build-out of 3-5 rehearsal rooms (lockout studios).
Professional labor for code-enforceable specs.
Materials for skateboarding ramps.
Materials for wall protection inside, covering walls, glass, bathrooms, etc.
Materials to build-out stage and mixing booth.
Additional expenses will be covered by my initial investment, as well as by investments from a few key friends who’ve expressed interest.
If we do not reach our fundraising goal, we will still be launching Unit B, it'll just take a little longer. This goal will allow us to build ramps, stage, art gallery space, lockout studios, and set up for the recording studio, but if needed, we can and will open with the stage and will build out the additional projects as we can.

We are holding a referral contest! Once you make a contribution, even a $1 contribution, you are automatically registered for three referral contests. The first contest is for the the sheer number of referrals you make. A "referral" in this case is counted each time you use one of the IndieGoGo sharing tools - to Facebook, Twitter, Google+, or by embedding or emailing the links. Whoever refers/shares the most people will earn a one-month pass to any events at Unit B. The second contest is for the amount of funders that result from those referrals. If you refer 20 people and ten of them make a contribution, they would all count as funders for you. Whoever brings in the most funders will earn a two-month pass to any events at Unit B. The third and final contest is for the contribution amount. Whoever brings in the most contributions from their referrals will earn a one-year pass to any and all events at Unit B! All the stats are tracked automatically and will be available for view at the end of the campaign. Don't forget that the way you register for referrals is by making a contribution!
