Two Spirits

Please join our Summer Campaign to get TWO SPIRITS into libraries, colleges and universities by this fall. Imagine a world where it's safe to be yourself.

Please join our Summer Campaign to get TWO SPIRITS into libraries, colleges, universities, and high schools by this fall. There are many young people who need to see this film.

According to the Youth Suicide Prevention Program (YSPP), gay teens are two to three times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. And Native American youths have the highest rates of suicide among all ethnic groups.

...can create a lot of change. Just take two minutes to read this short message, share TWO SPIRITS with at least two friends, and give $2, $20, or $200 dollars. Whatever you DO will do a whole lot of GOOD.

When people watch TWO SPIRITS, they change their minds about LGBT and Two-Spirit people. And when people change their minds, they change their behavior. Families change, institutions change, and that's how the world changes for the better.

TWO SPIRITS is an award-winning documentary that creates a shift from mere tolerance, or acceptance, to a CELEBRATION of LGBT and Two-Spirit people. It demonstrates that people contribute not in spite of, but BECAUSE OF who they are. See the difference? That's a BIG change.

Like when a young person comes out to their traditional Native grandmother and her response is, "Oh, my friends will be so jealous!" It's being able to tell people that same sex unions have been honored here in America for thousands of years. That's what we want people to feel--that shift.

The film is about a terrible hate crime and the death of Fred Martinez, and it's also about love--of a mother for her son, and of many Native cultures for their Two-Spirit people. It's a message that resonates with people in powerful ways and creates healing.

DVDThe nation is changing and progress is being made, but unfortunately violent hate crimes against LGBT people rose 13% in 2010 (LA Times, 7/13/11).  There's still a long way to go, but we know education is the most effective tool against violence, which is why we're working so hard to get TWO SPIRITS into as many libraries, colleges and universities as possible, as soon as possible.

According to the Youth Suicide Prevention Program (YSPP), gay teens are two to three times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. And Native American youths have the highest rates of suicide among all ethnic groups.

  • We've heard from young people who are no longer suicidal after seeing TWO SPIRITS because they take away a strong sense of pride and identity.
  • We've seen the significant healing that takes place when these stories are told in families.
  • And what happens on college campuses is amazing. The film stimulates action and deepens the discussion around sexuality and gender in ways that will influence many students for the rest of their lives.

This summer, TWO SPIRITS has been welcomed to the White House and is being seen by several branches of government. The American Library Association recognized the film as "making a significant contribution." TWO SPIRITS is currently being shown by groups and being taught in the curriculum of 249 colleges and universities.

We thought that was great until we learned that there are literally thousands of libraries, colleges, universities, and high schools nationwide (over 16,000 public libraries, 1,160 Bureau of Indian Affairs and government libraries, more than 3,600 college and university libraries, and 16,000 high schools) and we want to get at least one copy and a study guide of TWO SPIRITS into all of them.

We're reaching out to philanthropists and foundations for our big goal of $464,000, but with friends of the film and their friends and their friends we're convinced we can raise $50,000 by the end of the summer so we can start to get as many copies of TWO SPIRITS as possible into as many libraries and educational institutions as possible, as soon as possible, so we can reach the people who need to see this film NOW. Will you help?

This is a volunteer, grassroots effort fueled by passion for the cause, but it's going to take hundreds, maybe even thousands of us to get this important message out in a big way, so we're inviting you to be CREATIVE about how to share this campaign and spread the messages of TWO SPIRITS with others.

Imagine who might pick up a copy of TWO SPIRITS from a library shelf or attend a class where it's shown and have their life changed because of your contribution.

  • Contribute what you can now, right over there --->
It will only take about two minutes and will have an impact that will reach further than you could ever know.

  • If you can step up with a larger gift yourself or connect TWO SPIRITS with someone you know who may be able to provide a larger gift, know that your help will make a huge difference.
  • Give the DVD as a gift. There's a buy-one-get-one-for-half-price deal at twospirits.org
  • If you can't contribute dollars now, that's okay. One of the most valuable ways to help the TWO SPIRITS campaign is to share it widely with your family and friends.
  • Share TWO SPIRITS by clicking the social media buttons below. Tell your story, encourage others to tell theirs and to contribute in their own way to the movement.
  • Share the message with low-impact sidewalk chalk. What sidewalk wouldn't be improved with a nice big "TWOSPIRITS.ORG" in bright colors? See what we mean about creative?

Anything you do will help––and on behalf of all the people who will see the film because of you, we say THANK YOU!

SEPTEMBER 5th, 5:00pm

This is Lydia's sister, Sylvia. Anyone who's seen TWO SPIRITS knows that Lydia is passionate about changing the world-one story, one heart and one mind at a time. And she's at it again. Her next film IN HER HONOR has just gained some serious momentum which is why you haven't heard much from her in the last few days even though we've been in the final countdown of the campaign to get TWO SPIRITS into libraries this fall.

There are some surprising and exciting developments which have her shooting some important footage today, so she hasn't had a minute to spare, but I wanted to be in touch just one last time.

Here's the deal. There are only hours left and we've had just over a thousand dollars in contributions. Not quite the $50,000 we were working for, but Lydia reminds me that TWO SPIRITS would never had gotten made if she had taken "no" for an answer or given up when she was being told to for the umpteenth time.

Even after this campaign is over, it's not over.
No matter how many dollars are there when the campaign closes at midnight tonight,
we'll still be working to get TWO SPIRITS into the hands of the people who need it most, we just won't be able to reach as many.

Right now we have enough contributions to get a few DVD's into a few libraries which we will do, but if you can...

• Contribute a few more dollars and
• Share with a few more people

....RIGHT NOW, we'll be able to get a few more copies out there where they can do a world of good for somebody who picks it up off the shelf, because you put it there.

Lydia has and continues to put everything into being a filmmaker and a healer of hearts through storytelling and she's done a great job. So while she's off pouring her heart into getting the next world-changing film underway, let's show her that there's a community of people who care about films that make a difference, people who are willing to contribute, share and talk about the true stories that heal and inspire us.

No corporate sponsors. No big volunteer team. It's just you and me. This is as grass-roots as it gets.

Lydia doesn't know I'm posting this. She's expecting the campaign to come to a quiet close while she's busy working tonight, but I'm hoping we can surprise her with some last minute contributions.

We have until midnight tonight. Will you help?
