Who I am and what I want
My name is Vangelis Bekas and I am a Greek writer, aged 37. Two of my novels have been published in Greece and they have received good reviews in all the major Greek newspapers. If you click on the link: http://goo.gl/ULrkj you can reach the official database for published books and reviews in Greece. Using Google Translate you can confirm the information I give you.
Unfortunately, there is no option for literary translation with Google Translate. Literary translation is a difficult and costly work, carried out by specialized people. So, I am asking you to fund the translation of my novel from Greek into English, from an experienced translator, with whom I have already made an arrangement.
I believe that my third novel "The Optimists", which has just been published in Greece, will be of interest to the English-speaking audience. It is a crime novel about the revival of Nazism, in the country that gave birth to democracy, and about the corruption of politicians, which eventually led us to financial disaster and poverty.
So I thought I’d ask for your help. In this way what really goes on in my country will be known abroad, without it being filtered or misrepresented by the media. You will know all about our experience through the mystery of a crime novel. The translation will cost 4000$, and the publishing house which has published the Greek version cannot support this effort at this period in time, even though it is a big publishing house. I should also mention that I don’t have another job, and it is very difficult to find one, as about 1/3 of the people in my country are unemployed. So I’m asking for your help!
About the novel
It is a novel of about 60.000 words, written with a strong sense of humor. The key characters are Dimopoulos, a journalist who remains optimistic in the middle of chaos, and Detective Tzokas, a sui generis ouzo lover. The setting is Athens, a Mediterranean metropolis uniting the East and the West, in the period of a big financial crisis. Neo-nazi gangs threaten Dimopoulos because he insists on writing anti-racist articles in a newspaper, so he asks Detective Tzokas, a legendary Homicides detective, to help him. The detective, in return, asks Dimopoulos’ to help him investigate the murder of a corrupt ex-Defense Minister. This is a private project for Tzokas, hidden from the Greek Anti-Terrorist force. The protagonists’ past and their personal lives get tangled with the lives of a variety of characters, ranging from Athenian high-society to homeless beggars and underground criminals.
In the following link, you can watch the novel’s Book Trailer, with subtitles in English: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwFhSPU0TPc
After I have it translated, I will try to find a publisher for it, which is not so easy, as far as I know. In any case, if that doesn’t work out, I will upload it as an e-book.
I really hope you can help me.
If you can’t offer me money, I would be grateful if you could let your friends know, perhaps they would be able to help. You can use Indiegogo’s share tools, too.
Many thanks in advance, and greetings from sunny Athens.
