What is Thrive?

Thrive is a business project developed by a team of four students in the Design MFA program at California College of the Arts, San Francisco. Chris, Ramune, Sarah, and Wioleta created Thrive to foster empathy for the environment by helping you keep your plants healthy and happy.

Do you love plants, but have a hard time keeping them alive? Are you too busy between work, living in the cloud, & basejumping to remember to check on them? Do you need a reminder to water them? We are here to help!

Thrive is a low cost, low impact, sensor and app that gives your plant a personality and helps you visualize its moisture and light levels. By tracking your plant’s vitals over time, the app helps you gain insight into its needs. The sensor is compatible with all types of plants, so you don’t mistakenly drown your rare Bolivian cactus or undersun your voluptuous Hibiscus acetosella.

How it Works

Thrive is easy to setup and use:

  1. Place the sensor into the soil, and download the app.
  2. Locate the new sensor on the app, pick the plant’s species, name it, and take a photo.
  3. When your plant needs attention, it will “holla at choo” in real time, telling you how to help it thrive.

You can also check the health of your plant at anytime. The Thrive sensor will push its data to your smartphone so you can check your plant’s health on the go. You can even set up weekly alerts to remind you to take a new photo of your plant. On your plant’s birthday, you will get a time-lapse video of its growth that you can share with your friends and family.

Our Goal

As design students, this project has given us an opportunity to learn how to build a sustainable and realistic business model from ideation to execution. With your support and enthusiasm we will be able to prove our concept to our peers and ourselves.

What We Need

We need your votes! We are competing with the rest of the class to raise at least $500. By donating a suggested $1, you can vote for our project. Each donation counts as one vote. The money raised over the course of the competition will be donated to Architecture for Humanity, a nonprofit design services firm that creates sustainable and innovative structures for communities in need worldwide. As a token of our appreciation
, we will send you a personal thank you email and include you in our donor family tree, that will be sent to you at the end of our campaign. Additionally, you will receive acknowledgment on our Facebook page and your name will be included on the thank you slide of our final presentation. We need your support! Help us weed out the competition by placing your vote for Thrive NOW.
