Hello!

GK Series is our first line of products. It is composed by GKILO, a wood-like kitchen scale, and CLOGK, a timer with touch interface.

GKILO
is a dual clock and kitchen scale. Resting on one side, the LED numbers act as a scale, displaying  the weight of any objects placed on it. Flip the GKILO over, and the lights will display the current time. Using simple hand motions, users can easily reset the scale or adjust the time. In stand-by mode the object can be used as paperweight or shelf.
CLOGK is a modern take on the everyday clock. At rest, the CLOGK acts as an eye catching and modern  decorative piece or paperweight. When activated by touch, the wood-like CLOGK displays an analog clock or  cooking timer.

Each Thingk product is developed to be Wireless ready, and in case of great success we are thinking to a stretch goal to supply the wireless module built-in in our products. Moreover, our objects are open-hardware products, so you can wait our add-on or you can make your own wireless add-on, basing on our project.

With this campaign, we would like to bring our first line of products, GK Series, to the next level: we are now in the prototype phase and we hope to switch from prototypes to products. Moreover, we want demonstrate that it's time for a new class of devices, born for the Internet of Things era.
However, GK series is only the first step towards our dream: revolutionize everyday products, adding internet of things and natural User interfaces.

Combining these skills, Thingk enters in the next Era of med-tech objects, that will be smart, cool and thought for modern User Experience.
We attended the first European Maker Faire in Rome, October 3-6, 2013. Moreover, we won Switch2Product competition 2013, entering in Polihub, startup incubator funded by Politecnico di Milano. Previous Polihub startups were Fabtotum and Ginko Umbrella that experienced successfull crowdfunding campaigns on Indiegogo.

Last, we attended Milan Design Week 2014, one of the most important event in the world dedicated to Design objects.

Products

GK Series, our first line of products, is composed by GKILO, a wood-like kitchen scale, and CLOGK, a timer with touch interface.

GKILO

GKILO is a dual clock and kitchen scale. A wireless module will ensure the possibility of interact with other Thingk products (for example CLOGK) and with an app (for Android, iOS). Wireless add-on completes the functionality of our devices: through an app you will choose the food you are weighing, and automatically the app will propose the cooking time for that food and for that weight. The app will interact with CLOGK, setting the timer on the appropriate countdown. At the end of the countdown, CLOGK and GKILO will blink together and touching one of these devices, both of them will stop to blink. Each Thingk product is developed to be Wireless ready, and in case of great success we are thinking to a stretch goal to supply the wireless module built-in in our products. Moreover, our objects are open-hardware products, so you can wait our add-on or you can make your own wireless add-on, basing on our project.

Finishing

Thanks to the top quality material that we use for the final coating of our objects, produced by 3M (the worldwide leader in this market segment) we can offer 4 different finishing: fair wood, burnt wood, marble and aluminium.

PCB Core
GKILO and CLOGK are based on an electronic board, developed by our team of engineers and based on Arduino platform. We love Arduino and we strongly believe in Open Source Hardware, so we took the best from this platform (wide range of libraries, huge community for help and tips, programming easiness), adding to our board some characteristics specifically thought for Natural User interfaces. For example, PCB Core is able to manage several touch buttons, it has a precision ADC, with an integrated INA, for very small signal measurements, it has an inclinometer on board and it is ready for temperature measurements.

The Perks

__________________________________________________________________________
Stretch goals

_
If we will reach the goal (50.000 USD), we will be able to start the production of our first products, GKILO and CLOGK.
_

Starting from 100.000 USD goal, we will be able to offer a choice between two different wood textures.
_
Starting from 150.000 USD, we will switch from a 3D-printed structure to an injection molded structure. This will allow superior reliability to the objects, assuring high reliability to our objects.

_
Starting from 200.000 USD goal, we will include in our devices also the wireless add-on. Thanks to this, GKILO and CLOGK will talk each other and with an app (iOS and Android): you will choose the food you are weighing, and automatically the app will propose the cooking time for that food and for that weight. The app will interact with CLOGK, setting the timer on the appropriate countdown. At the end of the countdown, CLOGK and GKILO will blink together and touching one of these devices, both of them will stop to blink.

Please help us to reach the higher goal and we will have a lot of surprises for you!

Who we are

THINGK is an italian startup, with a development team composed by 5 guys with different skills: Stefano Marangoni (32), Andrea Gallivanoni (35) and Giuseppe Valenti (32) are Electronic Engineers with passion for design, innovation and personal fabrication, Umberto Tolino (37) is a Designer with long experience in Visual Communication and Industrial Design, Domenico Cosentino (38) is the Software wizard, with focus on web development and mobile-apps. The entire development team comes from University of Politecnico di Milano, one of the most renowned european universities in Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design since 1863

Our collaboration started with the production and realization of a clock to celebrate the new model of Adidas Profi. Designed by Pomo (designer), completely developed (materials and technology) by Thingk, the  clock recalls a basketball game: dimensions of the clock are the same of a basketball shoebox, the clock is covered with a synthetic material emulating the wood of the parquet and the circular LEDs indicating the hour and minutes recalls the scoreboard.

The hardware was based on Arduino platform, the PCBs was realized with Sparkle-PCB, the mechanical structure was realized in plexiglass glued by hand,  the wood-like adhesive material is cutted with laser cutter.
The clock was distributed in 50 Adidas Originals Stores in Italy. This project gave us the opportunity to understand that the world of med-tech objects is out of date: user interfaces with too many buttons, poor materials and no attention to Design. Starting from this consideration, we developed our vision.

Our Manifesto

We are what we think.

We are tired of dumb objects, of inanimate pieces, of single-function products.

We believe in elegance and beauty.

We are the the ideas we share, not the ones we keep secret.

We want to interact intelligently with everything we have around us, because this is our way of life: fast, mobile, parallel.

We are extreme, but willing to listen.

We believe that job society is finished. We believe interaction society has started.

We are the evolution of the species. We are the new men with the club and our club is irony.

We are immersed in technology, but we are not slaves, we are interpreters.

We are the ones that when someone say "Stop daydreaming", answer "You told me to stop breathing".

We are proud of our past, but we believe, think and live in the future.

We are constantly changing, because the ability to adapt to our time is what characterizes us.

We are a mass, not an elite. It may not look like it, because we are widespread, not concentrated.

You have to observe from above to understand us.

We would like only one epitaph: "They had every right to teach, because they spent all their time learning".

Why a crowdfunding campaign

We are a little team with no established company behind with huge funds to invest. Moreover, many venture capitals are still reluctant to invest in hardware startup, since hardware projects has bigger scalability issues, related to distribution, and big fixed costs related to production in big volume. For these reasons, we need your help to produce the first batch of our products: the raised money will be used for the purchase of PCBs, electronic components, for the adhesive material and for the construction of mechanical structure. The entire production flow will be made in Italy, assuring the best quality in all the phases of production. We hope to reach the goal in this campaign, demonstrating that the market is ready for this kind of devices. Last, a crowfunding campaign represents for us a good check, in order to understand the real interest around the world for our products and allowing us to construct a growing community around our project. The community is very importnat for us, because our products will be open hardware so that anyone can modify them, creating a customized version.

Risk and challenge

As with all crowdfunding campaigns there are risks and challenges. Delivering a tech product is not easy task and GKILO+CLOGK are a blend of several parts, requiring a good level of engineering and system integration, together with craft skill. We think we have a solid project, we demonstrated it with our prototype.
From a software standpoint we are developing the app to control our devices and every suggestion on new functionalities is appreciated. We want to reach everyone, so we are studying also the SDK for Windows Phone, not only for Android and iPhone, well known by our Software Wizard, Domenico Cosentino. Our challenge will be to successfully organize the supply line, from a good number of suppliers. Finally we'll succeed in scaling the production up (after delivering to our backers) only if we'll be able to increase our team size.
Known risks are:
- Higher production prices due to few units sold, increasing the number of components we have to preorder, reducing our resources.
- System integrations (especially software/electronics) might require more time than expected.
