Who Am I And What Is This?
My name is Donald aka Scott Roche and I am a blogger, podcaster, author, and editor for Flying Island Press. I've been a fan of Westerns all of my life and have always wanted to write one. Thanks to Jared Axelrod, I got an idea for setting and a brace of characters a few years ago and began writing a story. As occasionally happens, I put the story away to let it simmer.
This year I took it out of the drawer and started working on a novella. After sending it around to some friends, I decided to open up the universe to a select few authors and see what they would do with it. Imagine the gunslingers of the old west with an honor code similar to a samurai’s Bushido, the way of the warrior. These Martials and Rangers, along with the followers of the Clockworker - fabulous tinkerers and healers - are in conflict with an increasingly corrupt justice system lead by the Judges.
The short stories in this anthology will have all of the action and adventure that you’d expect from a Sunday matinee shoot’em up with a dash of philosophy and tension as ancient codes deal with an increasingly modern world.
In addition to my own story, this anthology will contain works by some of my favorite authors. Jake Bible, the mind behind Dead Mech and The AmericansJustin Macumber, author of the military sci fi novel Haywire, Zach Ricks, editor of Flagship magazine and author of his own Weird Western series,Jared Axelrod, creator of the rich world behind Fables of the Flying City andDoc Coleman podcaster and author of the steampunk series Crackle and Bang
Thanks for having a look at this project and share it with all of your friends!
If we can hit $2750 a story from none other than Alasdair Stuart will be added to the anthology. I want this. I want this some kind of bad. LET'S MAKE THIS HAPPEN!!
There are several risks and challenges in this project. I have to rely on the artist and authors to supply their works. I then have to take those works and compile them into a book. It's a lot of work. Thankfully my years of work as a self publisher, as well as my work for Flying Island Press have provided me the skills I need. Add to that the fact that I have worked with all of the people associated with this project and have ultimate confidence in their ability to meet deadlines.
What's the money for?
Each author will be paid a semi professional rate ($.025/word). I have also allotted money for an editor and an artist. IndieGoGo gets a piece, and there are taxes. I also have money earmarked for "miscellaneous" which will go towards fulfilling rewards and other expenses.
