In 2002, a scrappy young group of San Francisco Improvisors banded together to explore new territory in the world of improvisation. Ten seasons later, Un-Scripted Theater Company has produced over thirty-five runs of shows, in a range of genres and styles: game shows, such as You Bet Your Improvisor! and Improv Survivor; musicals such as Let It Snow!, Theater: The Musical and Shakespeare: The Musical; genre long-form plays such as Fear and Love At First Sight; and theatrical experiments such as The Impossible Film Project, Act One, Scene Two, and The Great Puppet Bollywood Extravaganza!
Now, as we approach our tenth birthday, we've got the opportunity to open our own venue -- a permanent home where we can continue to expand the boundaries of unscripted theater.
This is it. The big chance. The step up. Un-Scripted’s Game-Changing Moment. It’s where we go from a semi-nomadic troupe that puts up a few shows each year, to a full time theater company with a permanent home. That permanent home will let us put on a lot more shows, experiment with different formats on a regular basis and even teach classes. We'll be able to offer performing and rehearsal space to OTHER theater groups in SF, and help to strengthen and support the theater and improv communities by doing so.
The art of unscripted theater is still in its infancy. What we're trying to accomplish is something rather unique to the growing world of modern improvisation: we're building a theater dedicated to the art of theater without a script. Not an improv comedy venue. Not a long-form improv venue. This will be a house of unscripted theater, one in which our studied process of show creation and development will be on regular display.
We're a handful of passionate people who work crazy hours, and give up our vacation time and social lives because we love what we do. We're standing up and saying, "Anything you can create with a script, we can do without one in a way that is entertaining, dynamic and emotionally engaging. Theater doesn't get any more live than this."
It’s amazing, thrilling, terrifying – and Un-Scripted is ready to put on our grown-up pants and take the leap. But we need your help.
Every donation made to this campaign will help us all realize our goal of opening a permanent venue. It will help to put San Francisco on the map alongside Chicago as a place where great things were born not only in the world of improvisation, but in the world of theater as well.
What We Need
Only 40 to 60 percent of a non-profit theater's budget comes from the box office. Because of this, we need to establish some padding so that we have coverage for the first few months as we ramp up production of not only our 2013 season, but of new weekly, monthly and one shot shows as well as corporate and public training programs.
Then there's also the issue of infrastructure. The San Francisco Playhouse has graciously offered to sell us the seats, lights, and the lighting grid currently in the space, but we're also going to need to raise money for that.
So we're breaking it down this way:
Rent/Utilities/Insurance buffer for 3 months: $8000
Move in expenses/security deposit: $4500
Which gives us a grand total of $12500.
That gives us three months, starting November 1, 2012, to get our feet under us and go from a theater company that produced 3 to 4 shows a year, to a full time operation that keeps production (ours & others) going year round.
Un-Scripted Theater Company is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, so the portion of your donation that doesn't pay for a perk is tax deductible.
