Ever since I came back from the brink of death and turned my life around, people from all across the globe have been telling me that my story needs to be told.
I think it's because after living deep in the trenches for so many years of my life, where I'm at now is nothing short of a miracle.
Eager to get my story out there, in late 2013 I started writing it all down. Three weeks and 75 pages later, it dawned on me I had written nearly half a book!
Now, I've been a lot of things in my life: a wrestler, a bouncer, a heavy metal musician, heck even an air conditioning technician, but if there's one thing I never pictured myself as, it was an author. I mean, I barely finished high school!
It was time for a reality check. Ready to cut my losses, I sent my first 75 pages to James McWilliams, professor of history at Texas State University, contributor to the The Atlantic and The New York Times, and author of several highly acclaimed books, including Just Food. I had met James a year earlier, and after hearing my story, he told me I should write it down and send it to him for review.
So there I was, a year later, nervously waiting for his feedback. A few days later my world was turned upside down when I got an email from James telling me that what I had written was not only good, but some of the most moving and powerful material he had ever read!
James then went on to tell me that if I was willing to dig deep and finish the book, he was willing to work closely with me to get the book ready to be published!
But as honored and pumped as I was, there was a pretty big glitch.
You see, despite how incredible the last couple of years have been for me on a physical and emotional level, they sure haven't been good for me financially. Between work prospects drying up, cars breaking down, and a shit storm of plain old bad luck, I've often had trouble even keeping the utilities on for me and my family.
Desperate to stay afloat, I've gone back to working as a bouncer, a job that's not only kind of dangerous (how many other jobs get you stabbed in the neck?), but doesn't even pay well ($50-75/shift) -- which is why I recently had to work 15 days in a row.
Between working a ton of hours for really low pay, and stressing non-stop about overdue bills, I haven't been able to take advantage of James' amazing offer and get back to work on my book.
Which Is Why I Need Your Help
Thanks to the advice and support of some of my closest friends, I'm launching this campaign so I can focus 100% of my attention on making my book as powerful as possible. All of the funds raised here will:
1) Allow me to work on my book full-time, with James as my guide and editor, and
2) Ensure that everyone who contributes at least $25 gets a copy of my book!
As you can see, I've got a lot of awesome, supportive friends who are offering some amazing incentives for people who want to help with my campaign. These friends include The Ultimate Fighter winner James Wilks, world-record-holding strongman Patrik Baboumian, firefighter/ triathlete/author Rip Esselstyn, hip hop artist Stic, researcher/author Dr. Michael Greger, actor/ comedian/author Pat Kilbane, and the folks at Vegan Health and Fitness. I couldn't have launched this campaign without them and hope you'll take advantage of their generosity!
A Little Goes A Long Way
I sure know what it's like to fall on hard times, so please don't feel bad if you can't contribute anything/much. Even sharing this page with friends would mean the world to me!
Thank you for believing in me, my story, and the power to change the world!
