My name is David Eberhardt. I am a documentary photographer, filmmaker and now the founder of the River MAC.

Last fall I went to  Winona for a friend’s birthday, my friends showed me a building they spent the last three years fixing up. The previous owners put in an amazing recording studio, a show space and elevator for a youth center. When I heard the building was up for sale, I began to think about all the amazing artists I know. Some have achieved great success, some work unfulfilling jobs and make art in their off time, and the rest are struggling in the middle of these two extremes. I am not sure why, but I began thinking about the Herman Hess story of Siddhartha. I remembered the part of the book where all things become one thing. The creek becomes a stream, the stream becomes a river, and so on until many things have become one strong, unstoppable thing. Likewise with the River MAC, many artists coming together will create an unstoppable force

The River Media Arts Center was established in 2014 with three specific goals:

Now: To provide a space for artists to develop and produce work free from the pressures of the commercial workspace. Artists working with us will be encouraged to exhibit their work in our galleries and show spaces, as well as internationally, through our vast network of art communities in Asia and Europe. Classes, membership, and workshops will be offered at a discount to residents of Winona and the surrounding region of SE Minnesota.

Looking Forward: To host visiting artists from the United States and abroad to provide workshops, mentorships and collaborations in the media arts.

Looking Back: To honor and preserve the rich history of Winona through archival projects and collaborations with local elders and historians, and to share this history through programs such as discussion groups, book clubs, radio shows and film projects.

The business model of the River Media Art Center is simple. Artists Produce Media & Create Art + Artists Design & Market + Artists Package & Retail = 100% profit, 50% to the artist and 50% back to the River Media Art Center for programming, equipment and expenses. For example, when we record a musician or a band at our studio, filmmakers working with us will shoot and edit the music video, artists and designers will create production design elements for the shoot and will design CD covers, websites etc. at our all in one production facility. Stem to Stern.

Since I began this project I have been working eighteen hours a day, seven days a week. I have invested twenty thousand dollars In the project. I have employed artist to produce of the design and branding of the River MAC, fix up the office, and purchase equipment (including a large format printer, a 55 inch hi-def monitor, and a Macbook Pro;  for the Artists use.

My name is David Eberhardt. I am a documentary photographer, filmmaker and now the founder of the River MAC.

Slamdance 2003;  David,  Stupid =Brilliant  &  Greg

I am a tramp with a camera and have been nomadic since graduating from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design. I spent seven years documenting the rail riding subculture, hopping the freights across every state west of the Mississippi while earning trust and respect among the hobos and rail tramps. These friendships became the foundation for my first feature length documentary, LONG GONE. They are also the subject matter of the YOU CAN’T CATCH A GHOST photography portfolio and soon-to-be-completed book of the same title.

In 2004 I began production of my second feature length documentary, BOAT PUNKS, about young D.I.Y. travelers who live on homemade boats and navigate the rivers of North America. In the second year of shooting, Jack, Gerty and three other friends from the BOAT PUNKS crew planned a trip down the Mekong River. I joined them to document the epic journey, traveling from Laos, through Cambodia, and into Vietnam on a small Laotian fishing boat.

While traveling through Phnom Penh on the BOAT PUNKS shoot, I had the opportunity to meet and document the remarkable staff of Korsang, an organization that works tirelessly to save the lives of homeless street addicts. My third film, KORSANG (“to rebuild” in Khmer), depicts the day-to-day life and death struggles of addicts on the mean streets of Phnom Penh and the staff of Korsang who strive to help the people who nobody else cares about. It is my hope that the finished film will focus attention on the human rights of drug users and promote harm reduction as a productive and preventative measure in stemming the tide of HIV/AIDS

LONG TERM STRATEGIC PLAN

The River Media Arts Center (River MAC) envisions a thriving, creative community based in SE Minnesota, anchored by a supportive and catalytic nonprofit arts organization. The River MAC actively advances the work of risk-taking storytellers, and provides a venue to artists nationwide for workspace, mentorship, education, funding and exhibition. The River MAC is a space for independent artists to explore their creative work free from commercial and political pressures. Through year-round programs, the River MAC seeks to discover and develop independent artists and audiences and to provide a platform for artists to present their works to audiences—through festivals, galleries, radio and web-based venues. We admire the artistic and community contributions that Appalshop in Kentucky, and the Sundance Institute in Utah have made to their regions, and the River MAC will have a comparable approach.

Artistic genres will include film, music, design, photography, radio, and multi-media projects. Web-based and new media projects will be encouraged. The River MAC will provide access to artistic tools, including recording studios, cameras, printers, RSS radio feeds, computers, and software needed to create work. It will provide needed venues for showcasing the work that's crested within the space. The River MAC will be inclusive in the creative process, and provide outreach to youth, and disenfranchised groups to participate in its activities-both in creation and exhibition.

It is a city of centuries-old mazelike streets and Byzantine alleyways whose terrain had grown constrictive. I have made my home Minneapolis, Minnesota, a city infancy by historical comparison but vibrant with growth and expansiveness. It was here that I met myself 16 years ago in the form of a person asserting his uniqueness in the alleyways of his home.

It's difficult for me to say what these images are about because the whole point is to really not know and thats what is the most interring. The idea is to look long and create your own new ideas, thoughts, memories. My ideas are not same as your ideas. Why not love to wonder? When is comes to story telling I love to be in a constant sate of wonder, it leaves that much more room to breath into new ideas and imagination.
