The Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre is North Carolina's oldest operating outdoor theatre. Located in a small town, this independently owned theatre has been showing movies for 64 years and is a true part of Americana. Since its first movie, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, played on July 15,1949, families have made their way to our outdoor theatre for affordable family entertainment. The theatre has undergone many renovations in the past decade by both the previous and current owners. Renovations include repairs to the Moon-Glo stage (The Moon-Glo was the theatre's original name), improved and expanded food selections, upgrades to the 35mm film projector (the projector itself dates back to the Korean War), and repairs to our 40' x 80' screen.
Go Digital or Go Dark! This is Hollywood's motto after producing movies on film for over 100 years. The change from 35mm film to digital formats will cut production and distribution costs dramatically for Hollywood but this change in format comes with a high price tag for movie theatres. For large movie chains (i.e. Regal and AMC) this is just another business expense. However for approximately 800 to 1,000 small town and rural theatres, including 75-100 outdoor theatres, this produces a great challenge (and the fear of "going dark"). Most outdoor theatres are "mom-and-pop" owned and are already faced with extra challenges such as seasonal/weekend/nighttime only operation, limited screens (most only have 1 or 2 screens), and unpredictable weather conditions. This is where crowd funding can truly make a difference. Our funding goal of $65,000 will ensure the Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre continues showing movies for another 64 years. The funds raised will cover the costs of the digital projector hardware and software, servers, battery backup systems, 6,500-watt light bulbs, lenses designed specifically for outdoor theatres, completely upgraded audio system, electrical system, and projection booth, delivery and installation of system and training for the projectionist on our new machine. From the staff and owners of the Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre, we thank you in advance for your donation.
