We’re Fight for the Future, a nonprofit activist group working to protect your rights on the Internet. During the historic fight against SOPA, we were on the frontlines as one of the main organizers. One of the things we did was make the definitive video that was viewed 6 million times and helped the Internet defeat SOPA.
It's time to do the same for the mass government spying program --- PRISM. The stakes are even higher and the need for a definitive video on NSA spying is even more pressing. We can't give the government the chance to wiggle their way out of this -- join us in making the video that will give hundreds of millions of people a way to learn more, get involved and help bring an end to the programs.
The recent revelations about NSA spying offer proof that the U.S. government has turned the Internet into something it was never intended to be: a massive surveillance system that can track and monitor everyone in the world.
The movement to stop this mass warrantless surveillance is growing. On July 4th, we helped organize the largest online privacy protest in history, while thousands took to the streets. Recent polls reported in the New York Times show a massive shift in public opinion. We’re winning, and we have a chance to make real and lasting change.
That’s why we need to make another definitive video -- and soon.
We’re making a video explaining what government surveillance is and how it works that will give this growing movement a viral tool to educate and swell its ranks until our call for freedom can’t be ignored.
That's what happened during the SOPA debate last year. When we wrote and produced this video on SOPA we showed how the bill works and how far its reach was, and gave millions of people a tool to change the narrative leading up to the January 18th Internet Blackout -- the largest online protest ever. A video on the NSA’s programs can play the same role and bring millions of people to the table.
We're working with Mata Wata to make this video. The trailer we've made is a part of a video that will be 4 minutes long and create a vividly clear picture of how PRISM and its related programs work, what laws they're breaking, and how government surveillance affects our lives in a way that will be hard for anyone to ignore. The full video will provide historical context for the laws and court decisions that have led to PRISM.
What We Need & What You Get
By backing this campaign, you can play a crucial part in creating a funny, smart, and thought-provoking video that millions can use to spread the word about NSA spying and the impact that it has on democracy, freedom of speech, and freedom of press.
To do that, we’re raising $16,000 to create and publicize an epic video that will change the conversation about government surveillance from “is it happening?” to “what are we going to do about it?”
We’re not just making a video for the heck of it. We’re coordinating with a huge coalition of organizations, celebrities, startups, and activists and planning long-term strategic campaigns to push back on illegal government surveillance.
We operate on a small budget, so when we get awesome ideas, we ask the Internet for help. $16,000 will cover the cost of having the video professionally produced, Indiegogo and paypal/credit card merchant fees, and let us dedicate serious resources to using the video to incite meaningful action for online privacy.
Here's the breakdown (updated):
$6,000 video production
$1,000 audio production
$2,000 video development
$2,300 Indie-go-go and merchant fees
$3,300 campaign site building and promotion
$1,500 merchandise for our donors
When we ask for money, we get stuff done:
On July 4th we crowdfunded wonderfully unsettling TV ads that ran on CNN at peak hours over the holiday weekend to amplify the protests happening online and in the streets. The protests were so loud the NSA had to issue an official response. When a teenager was recently locked up for a Facebook post, we fundraised enough to help his family cover the costs associated with the incarceration, and mounted a massive online campaign that helped get him released and his charges dropped.
Who are we?
We’re Fight for the Future and Center for Rights, sister nonprofit 501c4 advocacy and 501c3 educational organizations. Our mission is to defend our rights in the digital age for the public good. With activists, technologist staff and developers across the country, we helped plan campaigns like the SOPA blackout and the Internet Defense League.
We have a track record of producing ideas, campaigns, and content that bolsters social movements for Internet freedom and basic rights. Have you seen Do You Have a Secret? That campaign helped stop a cybersecurity bill (CISPA) that would have given the NSA even *more* data.
What the media's been saying about our campaigns:
“The online community rallied on Thursday in support of live protests against the U.S. government's surveillance of internet activity, a practice recently exposed by a former contractor for the National Security Agency ... The online protest was launched by the Internet Defense League, a network of more than 30,000 websites and internet users whose goal is to protest attempts to curtail the freedom of the Web.” -- NBC News
“The online protest is being organized by the Internet Defense League, a group that helped create a high-profile Web blackout in 2012 to protest the SOPA copyright bill that Congress eventually dropped.” -- The Wall Street Journal
“Activists and tech companies are calling for the NSA to respect American’s Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable search and seizure and are asking users to help push for a Congressional investigation ... The Internet Defense League was formed by groups instrumental in getting prominent Web sites to black out their pages to protest SOPA last year. The House bill was defeated.” -- The Washington Post
