Update! THE FINAL DAY: Where we're at.
Hey guys, there's just a day left in this campaign, and we're incredibly close to our goal. We just need to pull through the very last bit.
We've sent the film off to get processed and our final bill came out to around $650 in addition to the $670 for stock, this money will be a substantial offset to that cost. The rest of the money for production has come directly from my pocket.
The film is literally arriving in the mail TODAY, and I'll be pushing out sample footage to help everyone get a look at how the final product will turn out.
From here begins editing, followed by coloring and sound design, festivals, and then the world!
Thank you so much to all of you who have helped out this campaign, it means the world to me, whether we make it or not.
My name is Lanny Huang and I'm a film student at NYU. This semester, I directed a short about an erotic novelist who sleeps with younger men for inspiration. The film was inspired by the backwardness of the typical treatment of gender in movies. I wanted to make a film with a female protagonist that exposed some of the flaws in common male character tropes (and incidentally passes the Bechdel test). I also wanted to shoot in 16mm...
The Goal and The Perks
We're looking to raise money to cover as much of the film development costs as possible. We're shooting on 16mm color film, which costs roughly $300 to purchase, develop and convert one 400 foot roll (11 minutes of filming). We shot 6 rolls in the production of an 8 page script, being as careful to shoot as little as possible while still capturing the best performances.
In exchange for your donation, we have souvenirs from the film, digital copies you may enjoy at your leisure and our special thanks in the credits. We'll also keep the campaign updated with news in relation to the film.
We are going for broke with this short. While this is a student project, considerable resources have already been put towards enlisting professional actors, acquiring locations to shoot in, and dressing those actors and locations to create precisely the environment we seek. We're doing everything in our power to make this project look and feel cohesive, artful, and professional. The digital option available to us simply doesn't compare to the quality and beauty of 16mm film. Why would we compromise with our choice of medium, when we aren't compromising in any other aspect of the production?
Following the shoot we plan on continuing our dedication through post-production and eventually submit the short to screen at festivals. Any surplus funding will go to expenses related to this process.
If you don't have the means to donate, we would greatly appreciate you sharing this project with people who may be interested. Thank you for all your help.
