Who We Are

Portland is known for its majestic surroundings, bearded residents drinking micro-brews . . . and bicycles. Since moving to Northeast Portland last year, we've been working to bring fun, innovative Jewish content to the city of Roses, with distinctly Portlandian twist.

Last year we brought the Pedisukkah to Portland for the holiday of Sukkot. Part Sukkah, part bicycle, the Pedisukkah was an instant success. Visiting various locations around the city, people flocked to us, taking pictures and sharing them with their friends.

This year we're bringing the Pedisukkah back! Redesigned for use for the entire year and reborn as "The Mitzvah Bike," we expect to serve as a mobile means for building community here in Portland. During the fall it will take to the streets as a Pedisukkah, come Chanukkah, it will be a mobile-menorah. No matter what time of year, we envision a beacon around which members of the Jewish community can convene and connect.

What We Need

Each Mitzvah Bike is built to order and personalized with custom-wraps and specialy modified for each holiday. Though its spirit may be in Portlandia, the Mitzvah Bike is born in Brooklyn, so we'll need to ship it out to the West Coast. (Unfortunately, biking out wouldn't get us back in time for Sukkot!) We'll also be printing promotional material and some awesome swag (some of which you guys can get as perks!) for those who visit the Mitzvah Bike. We'll need to cover all of these costs to make sure the bike is ready to serve Portland's Jewish community for an entire year.

The Impact

Portland has recently experienced a massive population surge -  among them many young, hip, and unaffiliated Jews. It is after all where young people go to retire.

Located in Northeast Portland, we're looking to engage our friends and neighbors, to teach Jew and non-Jew alike about the message of the Sukkot holiday and the eternal call to grow in our acts of social goodness. The Mitzvah Bikes speak to people and catch everyone by surprise. They help keep Portland meshuga!
