I’ve been an artist from the moment I could pick up a crayon, and now my art-dentity has evolved into being a writer and illustrator. When I committed to my first NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) last November, I was so impressed with what I produced over those 30 days, I decided to challenge myself with visual art in the same way: I gave myself the goal of creating one original piece of art every day for 2011. I’ve always loved the imagery of symbols, icons, antique playing cards and Tarot cards, so I decided to use the ACEO (artist cards editions and originals) format: trading cards of 2.5” x 3.5.” Though I didn’t realize it at first, my friends recognized immediately that my daily drawings were evolving into a special deck all their own.
Enter “The Incidental Tarot!”
I decided to harness the energy and potency that was coming out of my daily ACEO project and draw up a deck that was totally unique but held a certain universal appeal to Tarot enthusiasts. I’ve been studying the Tarot passionately since I was a teenager, so I began this project drawing on both traditional symbolism and the unique intuitive flow that was coming out of my creative process. The result is what I have come to think of and fondly name, “The Incidental Tarot.”
From the moment people started seeing the iconic imagery I was producing, the calls for an original Tarot deck came flooding in. I’ve always wanted to design a deck, but never before could I pin myself down on a theme or a style, since my passion for the subject was so vast. A year ago, I never would have thought I was capable of producing a Tarot deck of high artistic quality and deep meaning in a year’s time, let alone under the auspices of a casual daily art project. But just as NaNoWriMo opened my eyes to the beauty that could be wrought under the pressure of a deadline and the absolute refusal of an editor, the Incidental Tarot is opening my eyes in a new way, and inspiring me to reach deeper into the creative fire and push myself to new heights.
Don’t let the name “Incidental” fool you! The images in this deck are rich, unique, and profound. The pieces range from totally unconscious archetypes to carefully constructed traditional esoteric images. It is “incidental” only in that it arose from another project independent of itself. Every day more people ask me “When is your deck coming out?” and “Please let me know when I can buy a deck!” Well, my friends, now is your chance to help me get this project truly off the ground and running!
What We Need & What You Get
We (my team and I) need $5000 to print, market & promote The Incidental Tarot. Approximately $3700 to $4000 alone is needed for the printing of 500 sets of both the cards and the custom tuck boxes that the decks will be packaged in. The remaining $1000 to $1300 will be going to direct mail, promotion to new age bookstores and gift shops as well as other promotion. If we don't reach our goal, we will print a smaller run of decks. No matter what, if you choose a perk that receives a deck *you will get one*.
