Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I don't like running, will the app still work?
A: You don't always have to run and you could also go for a walk with it. If you're at home for example and won't be moving, the app will still work. Simply turn the Travel function off.

Q: What if there's a time difference?
A: Your travel data will be stored and your partner will be able to run along to your pace the next day. However, the walkie-talkie function will not be available for this mode.

Q: Why isn't there a chat function?
A: The Great Affair is about creating a more intimate, shared experience. There are many good applications that allow people to chat with each other.

The Story Behind the Girl Who Wants to Make a Difference

Hello world. My name is Gloria and I left the tiny tropical island of Singapore in October 2009 to work in Beijing. Convinced that I had to go to art school to be more "creative", I moved to London in January 2013 to do my masters at Central Saint Martins.

For the first couple of months, I struggled with apartment hunting, adapting to London's dark, wet winters and getting acquainted with the life of being a poor art student. However, the thing that affected me most was riding my bike around the city alone. I missed my friends in Beijing, especially Big Dirty Cycling. Rain, shine or snow, we used to ride every Thursday night. Facebook and Instagram only made me miss them more.

Earlier this year in summer, I joined my first art hackathon and everything changed. I came up with an idea to ride with them even though we were geographically separated. The idea was well-received and I realised that there were many people who wanted solitary activities to be less lonely. It has become my mission to turn this dream into reality for anyone who is in a long distance relationship - with partners, friends or family!

The Christmas Wish

Actually, I have a bigger wish this Christmas: to get as many people as possible to be on board with this app idea so that British Airways, Nike, Path and Spotify would collaborate with each other (or at least two of them) and build this app. Why?

  • Nike+ Running App allows you to choose music that's currently on your device but with Spotify, you will be able to share a common music library and create collaborative playlists. It will encourage people to subscribe to Spotify so they can enjoy ad-free access, thus paying more artists.
  • Instead of adding your entire Facebook network, Path is for "people in your life who matter most".
  • Airlines could provide you with flight offers for specific routes instead of newsletters with what they think you may like or what they want you to like. I was moved by British Airway's Visit Mum campaign and thought they seemed like a good company to partner with.

Everyone I have spoken to thinks it would be amazing if they all worked with each other but few people believe it was possible. Someone once told me: "a community can change the status quo". I'm going to stand by that.

What I Need

I have already built a simulator of the app with Arduino and tested it with lots of people to get their feedback before I'd finalised on the features and functionalities of the app. My friends Joel and Jonathan have very kindly dedicated their time and helped me put this crowdfunding video together but I still need:

  • An iOS app developer
Previously trained as a web designer/developer, I tried to pick up iOS programming over the past couple of months but given the complexity of this app, I need a professional app developer for the job.
  • An Android developer
Because not everyone's an iPhone user.
  • A graphic designer
The young and talented graphic designer Romain Blatter from Atelier Julian Legendre will be designing the brand identity and graphics for the app.
With £10,000, I will be able to get the iOS version developed (in about 18 weeks) and anything raised in excess will go towards getting an Android version developed.
Cocoa Hernando has very kindly and generously sponsored this amazing set of travel inspired luxury chocolates to support this project.

Risks and challenges

Without a doubt, there are challenges to building this app such as network latency and limited bandwidth but also partnering with the right music services. Historically, it would take about 18 weeks to build an app but given the complexity, it may take longer to have all the features and functions working smoothly.
