Summary

Hello, this is Andrew Miller and Shane L.S. Dennis, co-founders of Back to Basics Social Developments and Unity Market Cafe & Studios - a collaborative, youth focused, farming, musical, open source, social/environmental not-for-profit organization located in Barrie, Ontario, Canada.

We are launching a free, open source, collaborative franchise model of Unity Market called the Global Unity Project (original plan HERE), based on our experience working in our community over the past 5 years. This is a grassroots plan of action that will allow us to assist, and even fund, the startup of other Unity Markets globally. When we are all working together to house and feed more and more people each year on an open, transparent platform that allows for fast collaboration, action and innovation, we will be able to solve some of the worlds most pressing challenges. We will share our progress with the world through our online TV show and offer open access to our business plans, financials and strategies. We know that through a crowd funded, open source economy model, we could efficiently work together to end poverty globally within 10 years and showcase what truly sustainable living can be. This is a unique approach and it relies on YOU to help contribute to make it happen. Most important is your time to share this campaign and to help start a Unity group in your area. Second would be to combine and mobilize the tools and resources in your community or send us some equipment found on our wish list. Third is to become a financial supporter of this campaign while receiving some amazing perks and rewards.

The Global Unity Project is based on what we have learned initiating, building, growing, collaborating, testing, experimenting, and creating with the common goal of ending global poverty, and increasing health, peace, and equality in every community. We have been acting locally and thinking globally with our grassroots, low-tech approach to food, water, shelter, art, music and education. We have been localizing a sustainable food system with urban, vertical and rural organic farming that has been able to grow and give away more than 35,000 pounds of vegetables for free on top of sales; managing water with rainwater recovery, aquaponics, drip irrigation, grey water collection, filtration and reverse osmosis drinking water systems; building truly affordable, self-sufficient housing using ISBU’s (Intermodal Steel Building Units), geodesic domes, converted transport truck trailers; local energy production with solar installations and biodiesel co-ops; and building Unity Market Cafe & Studios, a community centre venue where art, music, food and education can be created, collaborated, learned and displayed in response to the local culture.

All the while, we have been researching the amazing technology and high-tech tools available that could multiply our effect and ensure that food, water, shelter, art, music and education could become a human right for every person on Earth. We have the technical solutions to solve poverty globally and at the same time build an efficient energy, food and housing system to update society to present day knowledge.

We have grown and given away more than 35,000 pounds of organic vegetables to food banks and shelters with the help of over 300 volunteers. We did it by partnering with local organic farmers and receiving donated land for our own gardens, urban and rural. We have been lucky enough to build a few public school gardens as well as one at a youth shelter and another at a women’s shelter.

At our headquarters, Unity Market Café & Studios, we provide education on organic farming, cooking, art and music with a youth focus. We have a gallery where many local artists and musicians display and sell their creations. We built a community kitchen and a recording studio under one roof!

We built a self-sufficient living system in a 20 ft ISBU (Intermodal Steel Building Unit), we call it an “Eco Pod”. This is a very low cost and sustainable way to house people. We have also built multiple wooden 20-ft geodesic dome that can be used as a greenhouse, shed or finished as very inexpensive housing.

We built phase 1 of a mobile, indoor vegetable garden using Aquaponics and Hydroponics. We put a 500-gallon drum full of 35 Rainbow Trout and three 4 x 8 foot vegetable beds inside a converted 53 ft transport truck trailer. Food on the go!

GLobal Unity Project

Phase 1: Film, web, communication teams, visit to Attawapiskat and building projects for Ecofest/Unityfest

We have our fourth annual Ecofest food and solutions festival September 27-29, 2013, on Barrie’s waterfront. At this year’s event, we are launching Unityfest, our music and awareness kick off for the Global Unity Project. Barrie will be the first stop on a 10 city tour where we will be performing on a mobile stage that we will build this summer (with your support) and tow with us. We would also like to purchase a used 90 foot steel, 6000 sq ft geodesic dome that can stand 950 people and fit our mobile stage inside. This dome also can be dismantled and transported in a 20 foot trailer. We will be filming and documenting the construction so as to show others how to do the same in their area. Open source!

We are in negotiations with some amazing headliner musicians for the festival and Shane L.S. Dennis and his 7-youth crew of musicians will be opening up for them with their new album, as well as our other Unity Studios artists Mindset, Spenny, Dj Skitz, La Forty, Simco Slim and Fuzzy & the Boys. We are also planning on offering a web platform and organizer package for people to host their own Unityfest house parties globally. We will host a map with details of all the parties happening and where people can go to raise awareness and mobilize their communities to start a Unity Market. All events will be Live Streamed for the world to participate.

Attawapiskat, a northern Ontario First Nations community is experiencing a housing crisis. It is our goal to focus our efforts on the communities near us that are most in need. We have a plan to help but we first need to visit Attawapiskat to build our relationship and engage the community in working on solutions and to refine our plan of action. See our First Nations Housing Proposal.

What We Need & What You Get

Oxfam estimates the cost of eliminating poverty globally to be $60 billion. That is what world governments spend every 16 days on their military programs. We are keeping this number as a goal to work towards and we will need an unprecedented global collaboration to achieve this goal. We have a target of $200,000 for the first phase of the project.

We have already done the granting route and been successful as a way to get funding to start some of these initiatives but we are very excited to move to a completely crowd funded and self funded social enterprise from here on in. Back to Basics Social Developments is a registered not-for-profit with a full board of directors and we are currently funded by the City of Barrie Culture Department, the Simcoe County Social Reinvestment Fund, and the Ontario Trillium Foundation for our food and music programs. We are so grateful for their support and we wouldn’t be here without them but wouldn’t it be great if we didn’t need their funding!

Where the funds go if we don’t reach our entire goal.

It would be tough, but we’re very used to gettin' r dun as best we can with the resources we have on hand. If we don’t reach our goal, we will have to scale back on some of the projects and builds. You can be sure though, we will never stop trying!

The Impact

We have been witnessing the success of this approach in our community. We feel confident that when we better connect, work together, and collaborate on a global scale we can reverse many of the challenges we face on this planet. You, as a contributor, are key to helping make this happen.

Other Ways You Can Help
