Multinational Exchange for Sustainable Agriculture (MESA) is a grassroots nonprofit based in Berkeley, CA. Our mission is to connect and grow the next generation of food and farming leaders. In a one-of-a-kind program that bridges ancestral knowledge with sustainable innovation, our impact is both local and global. Since 1996, MESA has directly connected 1300+ farmers, activists and advocates, and helped start 142 new farms and food justice projects in over 16 countries.
We know that this impact spreads beyond our programs. Alumni continue to teach and participate in their own communities, creating a ripple effect of knowledge exchange, innovation, and resilient food systems. In a world facing an interconnected food, climate, energy, economic and environmental crisis, MESA's work is needed more then ever. Connected and informed global citizens are changing the food system to regenerate our earth, feed their communities and empower the next generation. This is MESA.
For the past 18 years, MESA has operated primarily on an earned income model, and less than 1/5 of our funding comes from grants and foundation support. To sustain our small nonprofit and to ensure participation for those with truly limited financial resources, we are calling on our incredible network. Join us today and help us seed a new generation that cultivates ecosystem stewardship, equitable economies, and multicultural collaboration to ensure the future of food across our global village.
We're asking 1000 people to donate $30 over the next 60 days.
Become part of our grassroots movement to bring back healthy, fair and compassionate food systems around the world. Every gift you give spreads sustainable practices to a community in the U.S. and a sister community abroad.
Spread the word to your friends and family so they can become part of MESA’s network!
When you make a tax-deductible gift, you will also enjoy the fruits of some of MESA’s many farms around the world!
In the next year, your generous gift will provide:
Your support will fund 20 farmer-to-farmer exchanges, to benefit beginning and underserved farmers. MESA covers visa support, medical insurance, curriculum, domestic travel, stipends, coordination support, and an educational orientation and exit seminar. Many applicants do not have adequate personal funds to participate, and it is our priority to ensure these farmers get the experience they need.
Small Grants and Micro-loans
MESA offers competitive matching grants and micro-loans of up to $3500 through our Sustainability Projects and Innovation Grant (SPRIG) Program. Designed by our enterprising Global Stewards and farm hosts, these projects include new small-scale farms, demonstration gardens, farm-to-school programs, renewable energy systems, and Community Supported Agriculture. Thus far, MESA has funded 142 beginning farms and food justice projects in 16 countries. Click here to view photos and summaries of projects around the world.
Online Curriculum in Global Agroecology and Local Food Systems
MESA’s online curriculum in Global Agroecology and Local Food Systems will enrich hands-on training for beginning farmers, while advancing ecologically-sound production practices for small-scale farms. Curriculum will introduce a critical component often lacking in beginning farmer training: locally specialized skill-sets with a global perspective. Farmers can select from an array of modules to create a customized curriculum and training experience. In an increasingly interconnected food system, understanding the connections between the local and global is pivotal.
