WHAT WE CREATED?
This winter, our team shot and produced a powerful Olympic-themed video protesting Russia's anti-gay laws and LGBT oppression worldwide. On Thursday, February 6th, two days before the Winter Olympic Ceremonies, we released the video online and it immediately went viral. At the time of this writing it has received over 250,000 with coverage in The Huffington Post, Upworthy, The Advocate, GLADD, Towleroad, Backlot, and more! Meanwhile, its reach continues to grow as it receives on average 10,000 new views every hour!
WHY WE CREATED IT?
There are 77 countries in the world where being gay remains a crime, in some cases punishable by forced labor, lifelong prison sentences, and even execution. With your help, FGP aims to correct this injustice, and serve as a powerful rallying cry for global gay rights. FGP also encourages donations to The Russia Freedom Fund, a U.S. tax-deductible vehicle for making financial contributions in support of the LGBT movement in Russia and efforts to combat discrimination and violence there based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
HOW YOU CAN HELP?
Although the video has already been shot and released, we still have outstanding debts we need to pay to our hardworking cast and crew, all of whom offered their services at incredibly discounted rates. We also need to pay back several of our equipment vendors and other expenses. Although FGP encourages donations through The Russia Freedom Fund and Athlete Ally, it was was not created by an NGO, but rather a grassroots team of filmmakers passionate about promoting global gay rights. THE MESSAGE BEHIND FGP
Aesthetically speaking, FGP strongly resembles a Nike commercial or an Olympic promotion, and here's why:
The Games provide an opportunity for all nations to align their "brand" with the Olympic values of honor, inclusion, and fairness. Yet, for the 77 that wage war against their LGBT citizens, such branding conceals a darker picture. FGP aims to expose said falseness as a way of holding these nations accountable. We adopt the familiar aesthetic of a major sports brand to help subtly pose the question: for these 77 nations has anti-gay violence simply become "business as usual"?
WHERE WE'VE COME FROM
This past August, our team enjoyed great success with our gun violence PSA New School Uniform, released in partnership with Moms Demand Action. At the time of this writing, it has received over 90,000 views, as well as coverage in The Huffington Post, Upworthy, Adbusters, and via an op-ed in The Advocate, America's largest and longest running LBGT publication.
