Hey! Katie & Whitney here, coming to you from the farmlands of New Jersey (The Garden State!). We are theater makers on a mission to share the stories of people who are a part of the growing agricultural movement. Our new documentary theater piece weaves together the experiences and perspectives of the members of one of the oldest organic farm CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) in the United States.
We feel we are in the midst of a shift, within our nation and our world. At this time, many are becoming curious about how their food is produced, reevaluating their relationships to precious natural resources, and reexamining their personal lifestyles. Many people are seeking alternatives, a more sustainable way of life. Earth Works aims to share stories of those courageous individuals (and a community!) who are acting upon their curiosities, questions, and longings for a lifestyle honoring community and land.
Do you want to change your reliance on grocery stores, become part of a like-minded community, or make the effort to become more self-sustainable?
As you begin to ponder the possibilities beyond the social norm, you are faced with two challenges: how and with whom? The community at Genesis Farm is diverse but the land and the food from this land unites and supports all. From trading out some of their conventionally-grown store-bought produce for organic, farm-fresh foods, to making the leap to leave their careers for full-time farm life, this community is a living example of how to take the first steps into the unknown--regardless of where you fall on the spectrum.
We hope this play provides you with unlimited opportunities to beginning anew.
Creating site-specific theater right on this land incorporates the intense, rich beauty of the surroundings and brings the community together to experience anew -- through the vehicle of theater -- their own journeys.
From September to April, Katie & Whitney are interviewing members of the community. In February the interviews are compiled into a script, carefully crafted with the help of a dear friend and brilliant playwright. In April, five local, professional actors are moving to Genesis for one month to devise and rehearse. Performances are set for April and May!
How You Can Help?
Your donations are essential to making this project a reality. Below is the list of where your generous donations are going:
$3,000: Our actors are moving to the farm for one month, leaving behind apartments, jobs and family. In order for this to feasible for a professional to make a month long commitment we need to compensate them. It’s a priority for us to take care of them! Each ensemble member is receiving a $500 stipend for the month to cover bills, rent, gas and other expenses.
$600: We’ve set aside $100 per ensemble member for food. No one is going hungry on the farm!
$200: Office supplies (copies, pens, highlighters and staples) and technical equipment (lighting and set pieces) for the performances.
$200: Compensating our freelance playwright.
Did ya’ll hear about the Perks?
$10: Your mailbox is so happy because it’s getting a Genesis-inspired, one-of-a-kind postcard.
$25: We’re taking your special song requests, singin’ ‘em, and posting it on our blog.
$50: Enjoy a hand-crafted mini recipe booklet of five of the farmers' specialties. Yum.
$100: Come to the farm with a friend for a tour and some snacks and beverages.
$250: Savor a farm-to-table meal at Genesis cooked for you +1 by Katie & Whitney.
