Christopher Michael Aiff, is a 23-year-old living with terminal cancer. He was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in August of 2011 while in his second year of University at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. After completing several rounds of chemo and undergoing surgery to remove a 'compromised' section of his leg he was told he was cancer free. Three months later he learned the cancer had aggressively spread through his lungs, and that any hope for curing the illness had passed. In November of 2011, Chris was given between 6 months – 2 years to live.
Chris has inspired people all over the world with his outlook and positive attitude. He demonstrates kindness and compassion wherever he goes and has made it his life purpose to help others understand they can choose to create a life of happiness regardless of the challenges they face. It was Chris' spirit that inspired Justin Baldoni and Soul Pancake to feature him in their viral documentary series My Last Days. It was here that Chris reminded us that “The decision to be positive is not one that belittles or disregards that sadness exists. It is rather, a conscious choice to focus on the good- to cultivate happiness, genuine happiness’ – My Last Days.
Our Ask for Help
Chris has touched the lives of so many, and his friends and family are committed to raising funds to help with the numerous medical bills incurred. Chris’s time is short and the truth is that he and his family need our help. His mother (Lis) has made the decision to leave her job in Windhoek, Namibia (a 16 hour drive/ $500 flight) in order to be by Chris' side for the remaining months of his life. But in order for that to happen his father needs to continue to work to support the family. That means that the family will be split up for these remaining months as Chris' father (Michael) work is in a different African country. We would love to raise enough money to not only cover the medical bills, but to also make it possible for the entire family to be by Chris' side.
We are asking for help to raise a minimum of $30,000 to at the very least cover the outstanding medical bills. Chris has expressed to his close friends and family that the thought of passing away with accumulating medical bills that his family will be responsible for is very hard for him. Anyone who knows Chris understands that the last thing he would ever want is to be a burden to anyone, or have played any role in creating a financial burden. It's for this reason we need your help.
$1 - $30 000: Cover outstanding medical bills
$30 000 - $45 000: Future medical expenses and funeral expenses
$45 000 - $50 000: Donation to St. Lukes hospice
$50 000+ : Family expenses + Enable Chris' family to be by his side
Anything raised above the 30k amount will be used to help offset future medical expenses (estimated at $10k+) and funeral expenses (estimated at $5k). If these goals are exceeded, Chris would like to be able to donate a generous amount to St. Luke’s hospice, as the staff has been and will be taking care of him purely on donations. St. Lukes provides incredible support to cancer patients and their families and Chris wants to make sure they receive a proper thank you after his passing. Any money raised after 50k will then be used to help enable Chris' family to be by his side over his final weeks/days.
In the end, we are grateful for absolutely anything you can give. And if you aren't in a position to give, we ask that you please hold Chris, his family, and his friends in your thoughts and prayers over the next few months. Please help us spread the word and remember "Happiness is not a limited resource".
With all our love,
Chris' friends and family.
