HELP BRING THE BODY TO LIFE!

*UPDATE* - It's the last week of our campaign and we're hoping to hit our Stretch Goal of $30,000USD, which will help pay for the extensive lighting, camera, and steadicam tests we hope to conduct before the end of pre-production - all of which will make THE BODY
bigger and better! Thanks so much to all of you for your support, and for helping us spread the word!

Who the hell is Kenny Gee?
Hi. I'm Kenny Gee, writer and director of The Body. I'm not really being held hostage, but I am making a movie, and I do need your help. If you liked the video that brought you here (it's the one right above this writeup), I think you'll get an idea of what kind of movie I'm trying to make.

Five years ago, I took the plunge and went off to film school, at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts Asia here in Singapore. In that time, I've made a bunch of short films under the tutelage of some remarkable artists, including Oliver Stone and Todd Solondz, who taught me a great deal. This June, along with two of my key collaborators and fellow MDA scholarship recipients, Dhany Osman (producer) and Shijie Tan (director-of-photography), I'm hoping to use everything I've learned to shoot The Bodywhich will serve as my thesis film for the program, and the last film I'll make before they finally put that MFA in my hands.

What the heck is The Body?
The Body is a 20-minute narrative short film set in Singapore involving two crooks, one young and one old, who have to learn to work together to dispose of a dead woman that's turned up in one of their living rooms. It's a story that's deeply rooted in the crime genre, which has held a special place in my heart ever since I saw movies like Pulp Fiction and Fargo as a kid. It's been something of a lifelong dream of mine to tell a story like that in Singapore, even if it means inventing a Singaporean criminal underworld from scratch. We don't get many crime films here made like that - gritty, dark, and brutal, but also funny, and eccentric--the kind of film that makes you wonder why you're smiling when terrible things are happening on screen. With your help and a little bit of luck, The Body will be one of those movies.

How much does he want from us again!?
In order to make this project a reality, I'm going to need to raise $26,000SGD, or $20,000 in dollars American. My producer Dhany and I have tried our level best to bring the budget down by using NYU equipment and a crew of talented classmates, but the fact remains that there are still lots of things that need to be purchased, acquired and/or rented before we can get out there and shoot this thing. These include paying for a professional cast of actors, their make-up and wardrobe, transportation, securing locations, art direction & production design (that means props amongst other things), a few special effects, and feeding our highly skilled student crew, who are nonetheless rather prone to getting hungry. And oh yeah, we also need a ton of fake blood...lots and lots of fake blood.

In addition, as the story takes place at night, and in certain locations that would be otherwise shrouded in complete darkness, I'm going to need to hire a big truck with a big generator in it, to power some big honking lights, so we can get the exposure we need to shoot not only the scenes themselves, but also a couple of camera tests before our two week production period begins. After the film's been shot, a portion of funds raised will lastly go towards the various aspects of post-production, such as editing, sound design, and color correction, at a professional post-production house. This is all really important, I swear.

What's next?
It's my hope that upon completion, the finished film will travel and play at film festivals around the world, and showcase Singapore as a great location for making movies. As a homegrown genre filmmaker, I'm committed to expanding Singapore as an imaginative space and setting in which a whole variety of stories can be told; in fact, The Body was originally conceived as the first in a series of genre shorts that, combined, would make up a feature film called Night Life.
