Current fitness trackers are glorified pedometers. Steps are important but they’re only a single metric of your fitness. Atlas is a wearable device that tracks and identifies your different activities, evaluates your form, counts your reps and sets and calculates the calories you burned. Atlas measures your success; all you have to do is work out.

With a single on-wrist device, Atlas can track your body on the x-, y- and z-axes. It’s so precise, it can tell the difference between push-ups and triangle push-ups, bicep curls and alternating bicep curls and squats versus dead lifts. Atlas logs your workout with almost zero user action and keeps track of your heart rate so you can see how each movement affects your body.

With Atlas, there’s no need to take your phone to the gym anymore. The on-wrist display gives you live feedback on the type, speed and quality of your exercises as you’re working out.

You can use that real-time feedback to instantly see your progress and keep track of reps, sets, heart rate and laps swum. Atlas helps you anticipate plateaus and find what makes you stronger, faster.

Atlas can also learn new exercises you teach it. The analytic engine built into Atlas learns your movements, so no matter what movements your workout consists of, Atlas can track them and turn it into data that can help you achieve your goals.

The technology inside Atlas adds an incredible amount of context to your workout. Not only do you have a complete digital log of your specific exercises, Atlas enables you to see how your body is affected. You can see how rest affects each exercise, how quickly your heart recovers, the quality of your form and more. The Atlas platform builds on a community of data that will enable everyone to learn the different benefits of each exercise routine.

Atlas is packed with a suite of inertial sensors, similar to those used in smartphones. The Atlas sensors see your movement in a 3D trajectory and identify the specific motion fingerprint of each exercise you’re doing. Atlas then sifts through a sea of data and picks out the pearls that are valuable to you.

We collected and calibrated data on the most popular exercises and their proper form from professional trainers and other exercise gurus. The Atlas comes preloaded with that community of data so you can easily compare your workout and analyze your form.

The Atlas app experience lets you dive deeper into your workout data. It will highlight what muscle groups you’ve focused on recently and suggest areas to focus on next. To add a little fun to your workout, you can challenge friends within the Atlas community and compare yourself to fitness professionals around the world.

Atlas is compatible with your favorite fitness apps, including MapMyFitness and Fitocracy. When you leave the gym, all of your hard-earned workout data gets synced with your favorite app. If you don’t have a favorite app yet, Atlas is built on an open API so you can build your own amazing applications to use with the wristband.

The Atlas platform enables a new level of integration with personal trainers, allowing you to create custom routines and track clients’ progress. With Atlas, you can recycle the paper journals, forget about manually entering results, get data that provides deeper insight into each client’s biomechanics and deliver the next generation of personalized workout coaching. You can even sync the Atlas data to your favorite relationship platform. Atlas lets you focus on motivation and the development of your trainer-client relationship.

Over the last year we have designed and built dozens of prototypes. We have put our working prototypes in the field and are actively collecting data and testing the analytical platform with fitness communities. We have also recruited professional trainers and exercise gurus to contribute their form and insights in order to create a gold standard of proper exercise forms.

Our first batch of production-quality Atlases will be delivered to early backers in April 2015, and we are incredibly excited to see how it is received by the fitness community. We are currently taking orders for our third batch, set to ship Summer 2015.

We have a current timeline for our first shipment from our manufacturers, pictured below. Our second and third batches are on-schedule for shipment in Spring and Summer 2015, respectively.

The idea for Atlas was seeded when Peter, our CEO, developed a motivational platform for students and faculty at Johns Hopkins to lose weight and gain muscle. He realized how valuable tracking and analyzing data was; yet he was frustrated by the lack of adequate solutions. Mike, our CTO, had a similar experience but in a different context. At Philips Healthcare, he learned how data could be used to literally save lives when designing circuitry for defibrillators.

Our prototyping and development process has been very hands on and involves the local fitness community because we know it’s important to stay as close to the problem in the real world as possible.

For a full list of questions we recommend taking a look at our knowledge base here.

What is the warranty?
We will provide a one year warranty from the date we ship your Atlas.  We are finalizing details with manufacturers, but have committed to one year.  If there's tire marks, that's your problem.  Just doesn't work, that's our problem.

Is it waterproof?
The Atlas is currently water resistant up to 50m, so you can fully submerge Atlas in water, go swimming or run in the rain with your Atlas.

How is it lit?
Atlas uses an OLED display so you can always see your workout results.

How do you charge it?
Atlas is compatible with most micro USB cables. You can charge Atlas using your computer or any wall USB charger.

Can I replace the bands?
Yes, replacement Atlas bands will be available for purchase after our initial launch.

I have a metal allergy; does Atlas have a metal back?
Atlas does not have any exposed metal. It has a hard plastic casing that wraps around to the back and the wristband is made of silicone-like material.

What is the size of Atlas?
Our current design has the module dimensions at about 10 to 11mm thick, and about 30x45mm, with a one-size fits all wristband that is about 20mm wide.

How long does the battery last?
The battery will last for at least seven long workouts. (Battery size 120mAh.)

Are you taking orders internationally?
Due to worldwide interest we have added international shipping. International shipping will cost an additional $15. If you are outside the U.S., please add an additional $15 to your order. If you have already ordered and didn’t add $15 for shipping, we'll confirm the amount and address with you before we ship, and we can easily make any adjustments then.

Can the Atlas track activities like swimming and basketball?
The technology we've developed is capable of more than simple exercise identification. It can track swimming and we plan on developing additional technology for other sports.

Can the Atlas be worn on either wrist?
Of course! We've designed both the hardware and algorithms so that the band can worn on either arm.

Can I connect Atlas with my phone?
Yes. You don't need a phone to use Atlas, but you can connect over Bluetooth Low Energy (BTLE / BT 4.0) so your wristband will stay tracking your workouts longer.

Which phones will the Atlas support?

We will have an iPhone and Android app  at launch.
