What the story is about

Many parents around the world do things differently from the norm. They may be non-religious, of a minority religion, or from a different culture than most people in the community where they live. This story will be made available free online, just like this one was, for anyone who may find it useful. The text is below, and I have made the first panel. That's about the equivalent of having made the propeller for a ship. I need your help to finish this project.

What contributions are needed for

Until recently, I was in a position to spend weeks on projects which brought me nothing more than a sense of satisfaction. Unfortunately, this is about to change. I'm starting fulltime classes in September (and have to finish two other part-time courses before then), with an associated huge knock to our income. I will have to either find part time work, or raise funds for the peace of mind that the bills are paid so I can focus on getting the story done.

The wider impact

It goes without saying that the more we make educational resources of all kinds available for free, the more possible it becomes for anyone who wants to do so, to better themselves. Projects such as mine, which cater for a limited group, are also seldom worth the while of big publishers, or get compromised in some ways to be made commercially viable.

Contributions to this campaign are also about more than just this story. I have ideas coming out of my ears, scribbled text on notebooks and backs of envelopes, which I would love to bring from the confines of my mind to the wider world. Indiegogo will enable me to partner with contributors so as to overcome the gap between idea and usable resource.

Text

This is the text for That's Just Not Us. It's first draft, so some changes may still be made before the final product is uploaded to my website.

The main characters are cats, a kitten and parent.

First panel, fish in bowl:

Look at them swimming, it looks like such fun.

Why is that something that we’ve never done?

See, there’s a castle! Now isn’t that cool?

Isn’t that something that we should do?

Second panel:

Sorry, my darling, but water’s for fish.

We drink it, but swimming is just not my wish.

One day, when you’re big, you can splash, you can splush.

But swimming, my child, is just not us.

Third panel, dog playing catch:

Look at them chasing, it looks like such fun.

Why is that something that we’ve never done?

See, there’s a stick! Now isn’t that cool?

Isn’t that something that we should do?

Fourth panel:

Sorry, my darling, but catch is for dogs.

It just doesn’t move me, to run after logs.

One day, when you’re big, you can run, you can catch.

But chasing sticks is just not us.

Fifth panel, on TV, lions hunting:

Look at them hunting, it looks like such fun.

Why is that something that we’ve never done?

They catch their own zebras! Now isn’t that cool?

Isn’t that something that we should do?

Sixth panel:

Sorry, my darling, but Africa’s far.

If we had to find zebras, I think we would starve.

One day, when you’re big, you can travel there, puss.

But zebras, for one thing, are just not us.

Seventh panel, hamster on wheel in cage:

Look at him going, it looks like such fun.

Why is that something that we’ve never done?

He runs, but goes nowhere! Now isn’t that cool?

Isn’t that something that we should do?

Eighth panel:

Sorry, my darling, we don’t live in cages.

Cats like their freedom, we wander for ages.

One day, when you’re big, you can stay in one place.

But cages, my sweet child, are just not us.

Ninth panel, human child with mother:

Look at them dressing, it looks like such fun.

Why is that something that we’ve never done?

Parties and presents! Now isn’t that cool?

Isn’t that something that we should do?

Tenth panel, the parent cat and parent human exchange a knowing look.

Eleventh panel, close-up of the parent cat saying: “Meow meoooow”, with star and line at bottom of picture saying: Cat for ‘that’s just not us’.

Twelfth panel, child and kitten hugging.
