What is the Telephone Dance Project?
The Telephone Dance Project turns the classic game of "telephone" (also known as "whisper down the alley") into a long-distance dance collaboration tool. Katie Drake (DC), Eliza Larson (MA), Rachel Rugh (VA) and Barbara Tait (PA) send dances through the mail, interpret them from writing into movement, write them down again, and pass their version on to the next person. These phrases are used to create an improvisational score, directed by each participant in their own home state. The dance will change with each performance and each new location.
Why does the Telephone Dance Project rock?
The Telephone Dance Project is awesome because it is cheaper than your average dance company tour, but yields similar results - each participating artist gets their name and work out there in a faraway community, and each city gets to be delighted by artists from other cities.
Why do we need your money?
In order to make this happen, we need your financial support for things like travel, food, production costs, and rehearsal space. To bring 4 talented artists on tour to 4 different cities is a huge deal. $5,000 is a steal.
We appreciate your tax-deductible donation in any amount - even $1!
Breakdown of costs:
Travel budget for 4 dancers to 3 locations each - $225 each x 3 dancers x 4 locations = $2700
Rehearsal space - $15/hour x 6 hours x 4 locations = $360
Performance space - already been sponsored
Production costs - $175 x 4 locations = $700
Photographer - $100
Promotional materials - $100
Artist stipend - $250 per artist = $1000
Total = $4960
