To fund a demining team clearing land for a new village on land currently contaminated with unexploded bombs.

This campaign is raising funds on behalf of Peacetrees Vietnam, a verified nonprofit. The campaign does not necessarily reflect the views of the nonprofit or have any formal association with it. All contributions are considered unrestricted gifts and can't be specified for any particular purpose.

Imagine how you would feel if you could not trust the land you walked on.

If you lived in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam, where a staggering 83% of the land is still riddled with unexploded weapons and landmines leftover from the war, trusting each step you take would not be a given.

If you were a farmer, you might fear stepping into your field to plow the soil and plant the food needed to feed your family. If you were a mother, you might fear sending your child out to play in your own backyard. You would live with the burden of fear, instead of trust.

With the TED Challenge:Defuse, Heal & Grow. campaign, we have a chance to truly transform the lives of people living in one contaminated area by clearing land of dangerous unexploded weapons. Specifically, we can help 173 families from several villages by clearing land that they can later cultivate and live on. The safely cleared land will eventually be used for gardens to feed families, for growing cash crops to be taken to the market for extra income, and for homes and other public structures.

But first, we must clear the land.

If we can raise $75,000 (and with a U.S. Department of State matching grant), we will be able to clear 222 acres. That means that it only takes $675 of donations to clear one acre of land!

We ask that you consider supporting this life-saving project and ensuring that each person living in this area can walk the earth in safety.

This initiative will serve as a pilot project for TED Challenge:Defuse, Heal & Grow.  We are bringing the resources of the TED community to the horrible problem of landmines and unexploded remnants of war.  TED Challenge: Defuse, Heal & Grow has partnered with PeaceTrees Vietnam on this project.

PeaceTrees Vietnam is a Seattle-based, humanitarian demining organization that has been clearing land in Quang Tri Province for the past 18 years. They are internationally respected organization that is recognized as a model in healing the land and improving the lives, livelihoods, and the environment of the people in Central Vietnam -- inspiring trust and confidence through a daily commitment to the task at hand.

Because of PeaceTrees Vietnam's past success, the U.S. Department of State is going to match each dollar toward this campaign to help every donation go further!

This is a wonderful opportunity to increase your impact in helping people in Quang Tri Province. Imagine all the farmers, women, children, villagers, and entire families who will be safer and healthier because of your support!

Thank you.
