Support this new media literacy and media-making program for Ottawa youth!
If our children don't grow up with realistic gender representations in the media, how can we expect them to reach for the stars?
We need your support to provide media literacy and media-making workshops to K-12 schools across Ottawa.
This program was started in response to numerous examples of online harassment, sexist and over-sexualized portrayals of women, and the lack of diversity in media representations.
Your donation will go towards materials, technical equipment, and media facilitators for a program that will train Ottawa students to critically analyze problematic mainstream media and to create fair and diverse media representations. This program will counteract bullying behaviours and educate Ottawa youth about problematic representations in the media they consume every day.
Media Action Média is a Canadian non-profit working to promote gender equity through media analysis and action.
Media Action's REPRESENT. project has been bringing Canadians and media-makers together to improve media representations of women for a year:
REPRESENT. has sparked a national conversation about media representations of women. Canadians are telling media-makers how they want representations of women and girls to change through our REPRESENT. Video Project. Community and campus groups are hosting critical conversations and workshops on media literacy with our REPRESENT. Action Kits. And REPRESENT. events are bringing media-makers and Canadians face-to-face to create better practices models for media representation of women.
On International Women's Day 2013, REPRESENT. events were held at Ryerson University in Toronto and Carleton University in Ottawa, featuring exciting workshops and presentations that sparked meaningful discussion on media representations of women. Both events were also attended by influential Canadian media-makers, such as Scott Russell, Olympic Commentator and Host of CBC Sports Weekend, and MTV Canada's Aliya Jasmine Sovani.
REPRESENT. also engaged a number of influential media panelists, including journalists and hosts from Canada's largest news organizations, some of its most respected newspapers, marketing companies and online publications, among other media industries. Our major media partners include Shameless magazine, Gender Focus and Canadian Kiosk.
Your donation will be used to bring the critical media literacy work REPRESENT. has already sparked into schools across the city and give local youth the opportunity to harness their potential as media-makers!
Special Offer for local businesses and organizations: For every donation over $50, we will enter your business or organization in a draw to win a year of advertising from Ottawa Kiosk, a $2,000 value! $100 donations will receive 3 entries in the draw. Once you have made your donation, email firstname.lastname@example.org to enter the draw.
