About Mama Rainbow
As family is really big issue for LGBT people in China, since 2009 I had the idea about this documentary, but it was so difficult to find parents "coming out". In 2011, PFLAG China contacted me about this project, we had great cooperation with QueerComrades.com and two of other organizations. We finished this film in June of 2012. So far it had been shown in more then 20 cities in China, the short version for online preview got more then millions hits. It was even nominated by mainstream documentary awards and reported by mass medias in China.
Since August of 2012, it has been shown in Beijing Independent Film Festival, Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, Mumbai Queer Film Festival, now it’s coming to Frameline in San Francisco and OUTFEST in Los Angeles, which are oldest and largest LGBT film festivals in the world. Since these two festivals are very close, so I will attend both of them!
(still from Mama Rainbow)
In China, film is still under district censorship, Mama Rainbow couldn’t show in commercial theaters (but only café, university, galleries etc.) We didn’t get any benefit from the filmmaking, and the budget was only able to cover the basic expense of shooting. As I’m a independent filmmaker and activist, it’s hard for me to pay for my trip myself. So I really appreciate if you can help me with this excited trip.
About Popo Fan
Since 2007, I started making documentaries about LGBT issue in China, so far I had made 3 feature ones and 3 short ones (only one of them were non-LGBT). The topics include marriage (New Beijing, New Marriage), coming out (Chinese Closet), transgender (Be A Woman) etc. Beside filmmaking, I also organize film screenings. I’m director of 6th Beijing Queer Film Festival, and also running a project called China Queer Film Festival Tour. I’m board member of Beijing LGBT Center. So if you give me this chance to Colifornia, I will talk much more then filmmaking.
(my action against censorhship of film in China, the T-shirt saying "we want to watch same sex love film")
What I need:
The round trip flight between Beijing and California is about 1200 USD. I’ve got the visa, and found homestay in both cities. Any other expense, I will just pay myself. Any amount of your donation will make a different!
If you can’t make the donation this time, please help to spread out the ticketing page:
The ticketing page of Frameline:http://ticketing.frameline.org/festival/film/de...
and of course hope to see you there!
We will make a difference!
LGBT rights had got big progress these years in China, we have been fighting for freedom of love, and equal rights to speech, working for a world with no discrimination. But in the same time, few westerners know about our movement. I hope this chance will give more information about the situation.
We will also bring the impact back to China. As Frameline is a big platform for international filmmakers. I will also go as curator of Beijing Queer Film Festival. Exchange and bring new topics to China.
