SugarCoated is a comedy-drama feature in pre-production that takes us behind the curtain of working entertainers—and fulltime caretakers. Written by Adlee Fayyaz, this hilarious and heartwarming story will resonate with anyone who puts family first, while still reaching for the stars.
Coati Mundi, PKA Andy Hernandez stars as a fictionalized version of himself, a Puerto Rican-American band leader who made it big on the charts and onscreen in the 1970s and ‘80s. Far from the hit songs and movies with Denzel, today we find the musician working at a car dealership to support his Alzheimer’s-stricken mother, his sister who suffered a stroke, and his teenage nephew.
But even a decade away from show business, Andy dreams of making a big comeback with his new musical “SugarCoated”. When a chance encounter with a big-shot producer makes his goal possible—at the same time he loses his job—he pulls out all the stops to make one last attempt at making it big and saving his family’s home.
After hooking up with his hapless former manager, Andy hilariously chases down old contacts to pitch his idea, from accosting Spike Lee at a Knicks game to near-stalking Salma Hayek to literally chasing Madonna as she jogs—in his full zoot suit.
Forced to take a job at a local retirement community, Andy finds an unexpected cast in the elderly residents, who end up enlightening him on life, happiness—and the true meaning of success.

A Film About Family and Community
am an independent filmmaker working on a project that speaks directly
to the experiences of baby boomers who find themselves as caregivers, as
well as working artists and entertainers. I’m reaching out to you to
ask for your influence in bringing this powerful, uplifting story to
life. It's a timely subject given the success of films like Quartet, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and A Separation.
Written by Adlee Fayyaz, SugarCoated is a comedy-drama about a former 1980s bandleader and bit actor, who, in a last-ditch attempt to resurrect his career, risks losing the home of his Alzheimer's-stricken mother to produce a musical about his colorful life. When he gets an unlikely assist from residents of a retirement center, Andy realizes that his years of putting his family first have not only restored his career but his faith in humanity.
