We are a technology-based Startup, formed by four entrepreneurs who work closely with a multidisciplinary team from Virgen de las Nieves Hospital, Granada, Spain.
It all started when we observed that 24% of the female population and 7% of the male population experience some form of urinary incontinence. When we watched television advertisements we noticed the single message they tried to give which has been assumed by many people as the only option. They promote the use of sanitary towels, suggest that this problem is not serious and provide only one solution, to get used to it.
We also realised that urologists often advise surgery although they know that there is no guarantee of success and solving the problem: http://goo.gl/IUKgH
Furthermore, it is a problem that many people do not want to talk about including to their doctor: http://goo.gl/7Jh1b
With this in mind, a team of professionals at the Virgen de las Nieves Hospital and other hospitals with extensive experience in this type of treatment, clinically proved that physiotherapy is highly effective in the treatment of urinary incontinence.
By analysing the standard methods of rehabilitation, we found two major barriers when conducting clinical rehabilitation using biofeedback in a hospital: the lack of privacy during the training, and having to go to hospital.
As a result, we decided to develop a telemedicine service for pelvic floor training with the following objectives:
- To bring the hospital’s biofeedback training equipment the “perineometer" to the end user via Smartphone.
- To develop a platform for remote monitoring and the management of patients which is accessible from the Internet and follows all safety and data protection requirements.
- To enable remote rehabilitation, where, when and how the patient wants.
- Good value.
- Accessible from the Internet.
Our solution is described at http://www.birdisolutions.com
Currently the product consists of:
- The Birdi Kegel Trainer application, downloadable from Google Play and the AppStore.
- The patient management web platform
- The Bluetooth device for Android smartphones.
We needed to launch a generic quality solution in order to reach all potential users: pregnant women, middle aged and sports people. We also wanted to communicate to the people with this problem that there is a solution, which does not include the use of sanitary towels, surgery or giving up hope. It is therefore vital to develop and produce a dual version of the Bluetooth adapter, that is valid for both iPhone (4s onwards) and Android, with the design being developed from the current version of the adapter, which is only compatible with Android.
According to the International Continence Society (ICS), incontinence affects more than 200 million people worldwide, and in Spain more than 6 million. Urinary incontinence (UI) worsens with age and is more common in women than in men (1/10).
