The STITCH Milwaukee: Community Mural Project core organizing team is comprised of artists, art and K-12 educators, students, mentors, non-profit youth workers, and university staff who were all born and raised right here in Milwaukee. We are all community members of both the Northside and Southside of Milwaukee, committed to the beautifying of our neighborhoods through the arts and to promoting safe, engaging spaces for our youth.
This mural project aims to reclaim spaces, like vacant walls and empty lots, through creating murals designed and painted by Milwaukee youth and community members themselves. Through facilitated workshops, participants will learn techniques and be exposed to various exercises to aid in their process of designing and realizing their own panel of this mural. One unique aspect of this project is the direct community involvement in both the design and execution of the mural itself. Another is the location of the mural; half will be installed on the North side of Milwaukee and half on the South side, challenging viewers to find the other half on the opposite side of town. All summer we'll be providing a safe and creative space for youth and residents to be involved, a time when violence skyrockets and there are not enough accessible, productive opportunities for youth and community members.
The STITCH Milwaukee: Community Mural Project will be composed of participants just like YOU; young and grown people alike, community members, creative and caring!
