Campaign Progress:

As we continue on this together, we'll add pieces to the espresso machine above until it's completion.

Oh, look... We're well on our way to adding more to the machine! Close to half way, now!

Here's a write-up from Barista Magazine! http://baristamagazine.com/blog/?p=12181

And something from the Specialty Coffee Association of American and the Barista Guild of America! http://www.baristaguildofamerica.net/steadfast-coffee-tech-indiegogo-fundraising-campaign/

Steadfast Coffee Tech is a quality and relationship driven cafe equipment maintenance, sales, and technical support/education company.

We strive to provide the best equipment paired with the most knowledgeable service to the highest-quality cafes.

Our mission is to foster healthy cafes, a thriving coffee community, and the best espresso, coffee, and tea possible.

Well, we aren't that yet because we need your help! Partner with us as we seek to be the first independent espresso machine tech company to come from the coffee community.

Steadfast is built off of a desire for relational service, hard-work, and skill. It's built off of a love of espresso, coffee & tea.

But it's even more than that...

All melodrama aside, owner/operator Ben Schultz can point directly to the importance of the coffeeshop within his life. At 18, he was surprised to find a love for espresso. This led Ben to a job as a barista where he transformed. You can read more about his story below.

One day, Ben's manager pointed out the position he was in - he had a unique skill-set and he had been cultivating a love of the technical, hands-on side of espresso. There was a need within the company. "I think you should go for it," she encouraged.

Given the opportunity to become a service tech, Ben took it and ran. So much of his previous experience and skill in various fields and hobbies came together to make the espresso tech job incredibly enjoyable and rewarding for Ben. And he was good at it and people noticed that, too.

Becoming a "cafe service technician" just seemed like the next logical step.

By helping us get going, we at Steadfast would love to show you our appreciation with any of the campaign perks listed to the right. Feel free to grab one, or more - mix and match to create the combo you want!

This section will be updated as perk renderings and prototypes are made available!

Note: Perks are received whether Steadfast reaches our goal or not!

Steadfast Coffee Mug

Custom designed notNeutral coffee mug. Beautiful and ergonomic. Comes filled with warm thoughts from us at Steadfast.

Custom Clive Tamper

Mark at Clive has graciously offered to donate some of his beautiful custom wood tampers for the Steadfast cause!

Hard to beat the beautiful descriptions given on the Clive website so I am going to just steal that:

Espresso tampers are an important tool for the barista, used to evenly press down finely ground coffee before pressurized water is applied. The Clive team worked together to bring our own vision for a tamper to market. We found a Portland craftsman to lathe turn planks of Oregon black walnut, bubinga, and zebrawood into custom tamper handles. We brainstormed, prototyped, tested, reworked, and eventually formed an ergonomic and attractive design. The Clive Tamper can be part of your permanent collection of barista tools.

Some of Our Cafe Partners

What goes into Preventative Maintenance?

There's much more to Preventative Maintenance than gaskets, baskets, screens, & screws...

Partner with us because we believe in the positive impact of the third-wave coffee shop (and you do, too!).

We believe in the power of high-quality coffee and espresso to transform a city and its inhabitants.

We believe in the cafes, the employees and the people of the city of Portland, Oregon, USA.

We move out from our knowledge of the strict coffee, espresso, and tea parameters, to provide the best service possible to the best cafes in Portland and beyond. We specialize in Preventative Maintenance schedules for the entire cafe, concentrating on what needs work and when, so cafe owners can run their cafes and baristas can concentrate on drinkmaking.

Steadfast Coffee Tech has almost 10 years of barista experience, in and around Portland, Oregon. Since 2012, owner Ben Schultz has been wrenching away as a cafe service tech. He is well-versed with La Marzocco, Mazzer, Alpha Dominche (Steampunk), Synesso, Ditting, Mahlkoenig, Everpure, OptiPure, and Bunn. Currently, he is in charge of over 25 cafes in Portland and Vancouver. Relationships are also being fostered with Kees van der Westen, Slayer, and other high-end manufacturers.

More info below in the In Depth section at the bottom of the campaign.

Portland needs our independence! Most roasters aren't "big" enough to need an in-house tech (non-billable hours, agh!) and they don't have enough accounts to employ a full-time tech.

As a reasonably priced, trustworthy, espresso/coffee loving, and independent company, the existence of Steadfast will allow more high-quality cafes to have their equipment's maintenance kept in check. Better functioning machines and more knowledgeable baristas = better coffee.

Going independent means that Steadfast needs to fund its own business start-up fees, wrangle together some tools, and develop a decent parts inventory. We need a reliable service vehicle to make service calls while holding a decent stock of parts safely and securely.

  • Business start-up fees & insurance
  • Tools for shop & service vehicle
  • Parts inventory for shop & service vehicle
  • Office supplies, Triplecate forms, etc
  • Uniforms
  • Service vehicle
  • Loaner equipment to help cafes stay functional if their equipment needs long-term maintenance
  • Marketing & related materials
  • Certification courses for Bunn & Fetco service tech

There's room for growth, too!

$28,000 is a big goal, twice what we're hoping to raise, but this would allow us to build out a Technical Training Lab located in Inner Southeast, Portland, Oregon.

The lab would be a one-of-a-kind training ground for baristas, cafe owners, future techs, and the coffee public. Demo machines of various makes, not just one, would be on display and at consumer's disposal to try and use.

Portland, Oregon, has some of the best coffee in the world. We have some of the best cafes in the world. But we do not have some of the best independent technicians in the world. There doesn't seem to be any experienced coffee industry professionals who work on equipment.

Ben is starting Steadfast to change that. Ben has been a frequent regular at multiple shops around Portland strictly for his love of coffee.

A city with a thriving Independent Cafe community needs a friendly, skilled, knowledgeable service tech community, as well. Mature coffee markets need this type of tech. We do not say this because of our lack of respect but because we believe that this city needs Third Wave/Specialty coffee tech!

We don't want to be horders of the magical knowledge of tech, either - we want Portland to have as high of a bar set for technical service, knowledge, and education as we have for our cafe owners, roasters, and baristas. We want to spread the love of the coffee dork. We want to raise the bar for our city!

Thanks so much for stopping by and considering a contribution to this cause. The Portland coffee community thanks you for your dedication to quality coffee, espresso, and tea.

Don't feel bad if you can't help out - just pass this along to anyone you may know who might be interested in helping out!

We are so grateful for those of you who decide to help cultivate and foster this type of business in this type of city.

This may be very forward because we might not know you very well but, it's safe to say, we love you! Thanks so much.

Take care. Really.

Interested in the nitty-gritty?? What is Steadfast Coffee Tech?

Steadfast Coffee Tech, LLC (Steadfast) is a service-based business that takes care of the specialty coffee industry of Portland, Oregon, by sourcing, maintaining and repairing high-end cafe equipment.

Cafes in the specialty coffee industry have espresso machines from companies such as La Marzocco or Synesso which cost on average $10,000 and upwards to $25,000. These machines have preventative maintenance (PM) schedules set by their respective manufacturers, most commonly on a quarterly basis.

In conjunction with cafe management and ownership, Steadfast creates and maintains PM schedules within specialty shops in Portland (we may move outside of Portland to the surrounding areas if demand arises). These PM schedules are based on the quality of equipment, demand on equipment, and standards of the management and employees. Scheduled maintenance creates the bulk of Steadfast's sustainable workload.

Many micro-roasters in Portland sell their beans on a wholesale basis to worthy cafes in the area. Steadfast works with these high-quality roasters to create relationships with their wholesale accounts. This provides an added benefit to the roasters, who can concentrate on roasting while knowing the equipment of their wholesale cafes are in good working order. This also provides a benefit to the wholesale cafes as they are introduced to a quality technician company that is trusted and recommended by their roasters, who they already trust greatly.

Supply and installation of new equipment is also handled by Steadfast, although cafes are free to source their own equipment. Steadfast does not work with every cafe, or every machine, but only those that reach the high-quality standards of Steadfast Coffee Tech and the Third-wave Coffee Industry.

Equipment consultation and design for new cafes will be offered to aid prospective cafes in opening with the perfect line-up of equipment and the know-how to maintain these expensive and important pieces of equipment. As such, Steadfast aims to create distributor status with the major players in the specialty coffee arena. This equipment will be thoroughly tested within the Steadfast shop to ensure proper functioning and to speed up the cafe install process.

Another facet of Steadfast's business is the availability of emergency repair for a cafe's equipment. Emergency repair carries a specific hierarchy describing what type of repair necessitates an emergency visit and what can be a scheduled repair. A high-priority repair takes place when a very important piece of equipment is not working (espresso machine), or when a piece of equipment is malfunctioning in a way that it has become a safety hazard.

A well thought out inventory is held at the Steadfast shop (location TBD) to house most parts for emergency and a continuous inventory for preventative maintenance.

Ben Schultz, owner of Steadfast, is in charge of the bulk of hands-on technician work. Ben has worked in the coffee industry of Portland since 2005, most recently as the Technical Service Director of Ristretto Roasters. He is La Marzocco trained and has high technical knowledge of the Alpha Dominche Steampunk Coffee Machine, Synesso espresso machines, Mazzer grinders, Mahlkönig grinders, Ditting grinders, Bunn hot water towers and grinders, water filtration systems, Fetco hot water towers and brewers. He keeps contacts and accounts at every one of these companies.

Within one year, Steadfast will expand to bring on an apprentice technician who will be trained by Ben Schultz to carry out preventative and emergency maintenance. Within three years, Steadfast will grow to at least three technicians strong.

Much of the technical work is done on-site, meaning Steadfast drives to the cafe location to work on machines. Most machine parts are replaced on location. As such, Steadfast has a shop vehicle to transport tools and machinery and to carry a small "rolling inventory" of commonly needed parts. If rebuilds are necessary, these rebuilds happen within the Steadfast shop, a warehouse workspace used for holding inventory, conducting work, meeting with clients, benchtesting new machines and housing parts and machine inventories.

More About the Owner/Operator

Steadfast is built off of a desire for relational service, hard-work, and skill. It's built off of a love of espresso, coffee & tea.

But it's even more than that...

All melodrama aside, owner/operator Ben Schultz can point directly to the importance of the coffeeshop within his life. At 18, he was surprised to find a love for espresso. This led Ben to a job as a barista where he transformed.

As a barista and in the coffeeshop, he met and fell in love with his wife. He fell in love with books, with the bicycle, rekindled his creativity, gained priceless skills of professionalism, conversation, and calm under pressure. He grew. He found a call to responsibility and a deeper connection with the world and people around him. He even met God within the connections of a coffeeshop. Seriously!

The cafe, and over ten years in Portland, has done a lot for this Wisconsin transplant. In gratitude, keeping machines in tip-top shape is the least he can do.

(So, maybe there was some melodrama in there, but it is all true, that's the crazy part!)

For over a year Ben has run a one-man department taking care of over 25 cafes for a local roaster. He set the structure, managed accounts and wrenched on machines all over Portland and Vancouver. Unfortunately, within the context of a micro-roaster, his job doesn't make financial sense - it costs more for the cafe owner to have someone on staff than it would ever cost to have an independent tech work on their machines.

The next natural step seemed to move out in the power and grace of the opportunities he was given.

His hard-work, love of people and coffee, and attention to detail set him apart. He believes in collaboration and co-op work. He refuses to step on others to "get ahead" and believes in the repayment of those who have been even the least bit helpful. To grow in business and life with integrity is often difficult but Ben's steadfast ability to live in a way beneficial to others is more than a personal mantra or ideology - it's the only way to live well.

With enough buzz, Steadfast will be multiple mechanics strong, wrenching benevolently on the Stradas, Synessos, Lineas, and GB5s (and more) of Portland and beyond!
